Get a dog your child likes... they will have to live with it and grow up with it... take them to the pound or to a breeder to see them
If you can, try not to get one from a pet shop. There are many dogs (and puppies) available from the pound/local animal shelter. They are cheaper and provide alot more love. If you do want a 'breed' go to the breeder, not through a pet shop.
You want something that will go for walks/run/chase balls but still be happy on its own
Also, they become part of the family... don't leave them behind on vacations, take them with you (many places are dog freidnly now) or if you must leave them behind have a freind come and live at your home whilst you are away.
A Pug or Boston Terrior is good (Bostons were bred to be in apartments and receive their exercise as a walk) Friends have these
Cavaliers are beautiful (I have one) but they MUST have a family. They do not deal well with being on their own for extended periods
Talk to your local vet. They will be able to match a puppy to your lifestyle. They may even let you both go along to a puppy preschool... you can talk to other owners, see how the puppies interact.
In some countries the most dumped dogs are maltese, shitzu and jack russell terriers because of barking. I am not saying anything about the dog or the owners, (other dog lover pls don;t get offended or upset) but something you need to consider.
Please PLEASE don't forget that a dog is for life and they are apart of the family. You can't just give up on them when circumstances change. Take a trip to the pound and see all the lovely eyes that people have neglected. And if you can ... get one from there. They will love you forever, cause they know what it is like not to be loved.

How mature is your 12 year old? Is he/she going to be the primary care givers? I am not a small dog fan, but I did enjoy our little poddle growing up. Lots of small dogs at the shelters looking for good homes! Pure breeds are not always the best!
Good Luck

Mutt-dogs from the pound are usually the best. Im thinking of getting a poodle-cross for my 7 yr old. Easy to train and care for.

Personally I would get a Sheltie. They weigh between 15-30lbs, but they are adorable and very affectionate. If you do not like a dog that sheds, I would not recommend this breed. Another suggestion would be a terrier, they are cute and do not shed as often

I have Chihuahua's and I just think they're great!! Easy to take care of, small enough to lock up if needed, and b/c there a smaller breed a smaller yard would be fine! I have a fenced in back yard, and it's rather small, and they just love it!

a minature schnauzer i am twelve and have one. she loves to stay near you and have you love on her. they arent hard to take care of just take them outside or i even potty trained mine to go in a pee pan. she raely goes on the floor and they dont eat as much as large dogs, they dont drool or slobber on you. they have lots of energy though but if she plays with her enough the engery level will stay down. if you never feed them from the table then they wont beg.
A trick to training a dog to go outside. Put small wind chimes or bells on the door to the outside. every time you go out ring them and soon enough you pup will tell you when they want to go out side by ringing them themselves. be sure to have them in reach.
Hope i wa shelpful but im sure their are many other dogs that would suit you too oh and anoter nice thing their hypoallergenic and DONT SHEAD!

hi as far as a dog is concerned a lab would be my personal choice they are very loyal and love attention (as most dogs do ) a small may be cute but most are very high strung and very impaitent ! my last lab was a very faithful to both of my kids and was their "shadow " for over thirteen years, and when i do get another dog it will be a lab no doubt about it !
