I am currently in the Air Force but my time will be up soon. I plan on going from Active duty to Guard and then getting a job with the Prince George's County, MD Police Dept.

I have always lived within the military and am a little nervous about the transition from military to civilian life. Has anyone been through this before and how did it go for you.

That's exactly what I did 21 years ago, went from a Marine MP to civilian cop. It's different. The UCMJ is obviously different, and the restrictions on you as a civilian cop are more stringent. You know some segments of the civilian population are very sensitive about being picked on by "The Man" so you must be nice to them. Seriously, you should adjust fine. Once you go through the academy and become familiar with MD law, and civilian police techniques, you'll easily identify the differences. They are not that great in reality, and your experience in the AF will help you.
I did kinda struggled with the way you deal with people in the real world right at first. I came from a steady diet of dealing with Marines and the unique way they view and interact with the world, as well as a steady supply of sometimes very drunk Marines and sailors (I was in the fleet most of my time as an MP). Your average joe on Mainstreet USA is handled a little differently. Apparently you can't slam a drunk into the side of an ambulance when he gives the Paramedics a hard time. I learned, and so will you. Best of luck to you.

Being an MP type in the MIL is childs play compared to being a REAL Policeman, in fact, it is comparing apples to oranges.

I stood Shore Patrol watches in the Navy, and worked with MAA at times to, what a freaking joke! To me, the MIL Police are rent-a-cops, and you should be VERY nervous about joining the REAL force!

It's hard enough to transition from MIL life to civilian life, and throwing yourself to the wolves will compound it! Good luck!
