Hello everyone. I really need your help. I just got a new job, and there's a staff social tomorrow morning. I don't know anyone, and I'm already so nervous about it that I can't even sleep! Does anyone have any advice of how to get through this? I'm really not so great at the informal-mingling-with-strangers, thing.
Thanks in advance for any help, I really appreciate it.

Sorry for the typo, in the last line of the first paragraph I meant to type strangers!

Prepare some conversation starters ahead of time. Ask people where they are from, where they went to school, and use your experiences to reply with something thoughtful about what they said. Have an excuse waiting (bathroom, get another drink, etc) in case some conversations don't go well. When you make a new friend, the conversation will flow easily. Good luck!

Everyone is nervous when they get a new job, the best thing about that is that they will know this also so they won't try to force you to blend in. Be casual, don't try to impress, win them over by being yourself and talking about what you like while still listening to what they have to say to you. Every human wants to be heard, if you listen you gain the respect of that person through the attention you have given them. Smile when you're happy, shake hands when they are extended towards you, make new friends among your coworkers. These are people you will most likely be seeing every day, friendship will make things move along much more smoothly. I wish you luck at your staff social, this is the one case where you don't need to be a over achiever, just be yourself.

I too used to have same problem 'till someone confronted me about why I cared so much what strangers thought of me.Wear something you like that's comfortable,go strait to restroom and freshen up when you get there,be friendly and smile but is best to let people come to you for conversation, and most importantly...remember...you ARE somebody...always...no matter what anybody else might think!Keep your chin up and have fun.

Try and team up with someone you've met at your new job. Everyone has a favourite subject they like to talk about; talk about yours or try and find out what someone else likes to talk about. After a short while, you should begin to feel comfortable.

Find someone to talk to about shoes or something. Tell them your nervous and it should take off from there. :D

what you should do is think positive. you can do it. just do what almost anyone would do 'picture everyone nude' lol. well only if you want to. but try to calm yourself. you're doing good just to be there right?

Forget what everyone thinks of you because it really doesn't matter, as long as you know your sane.
