German Shepherd!!
Again another one. They are everything you want in a dog
Easy to Train
Feircly Loyal to their family
Energetic and Fun
Know when your down (will lick tears and give good cuddles)
Protective of their family and yard
We have two shepherd (both girls) one 11 (his) and the other 2. (mine)
I will always have a Shepherd.
We were water skiing with friends, and one of the boys (7) ran off towards the water whilst we were unloading boats/equip, but none of us saw him. My shepherd started barking and we all went to have a look... she had tackled him and wouldn't let him go near the water until we got ther... he was the only one of the kids who couldn't swim.
Another friends daughter started dating... the fellow came around to pick her up one night and the Shepherd wouldn't let him near the family. Dad promptly said that was the end of the relationhip. If the dog doesn't approvide neither do I... this fellow was picked up for rape 3 months later.
I can give you countless stories like this. I am sure the other Shepherd owners out there can too!

With the right training and responsible care a Rottweiler makes a great guard dog and family pet.
I know a family that had a big male Rott named Jake and an 18 month old baby. Whenever the baby got around Jake he would grab the dog's tongue. Jake learned to pull his tongue in his mouth whenever the baby was around. We bred our female Gretchen to Jake and had fabulous puppies. My niece, Aly, was 2 at the time and I wanted some pictures of Aly and Gretchen to show prospective buyers as I didn't have any kids. So I asked Aly to go sit BY Gretchen so I could take her picture. Well, she sat ON Gretchen, just like she was a chair, with her little hands folded. They looked so cute. Aly sitting on Gretchen with both of them with big smiles on their faces!
But I must say that owning a Rott is a BIG responsibility because IF something happens with a Rott it will be bad. They require professional obedience training and a strong dominate owner/handler or they will take over. Rotts are definitely NOT a first dog. But can be a great dog and friend.

Japanese Akita................
I spent days on the Internet to get just this answer. I believe that a bull mastiff is number one but they have many health problems. Then is the Akita, then a Rottweiler. I chose the Akita because the Rottweiler has been over bred. The Akita is loyal, loving, strong, courageous and fearless. At over 110 pound in weight and 28 inches tall he is an awesome guard dog. I have a two year old daughter and he is great with her. (I would get rid of the Akita before putting my daughter in harms way - I feel very secure with him and his temperament is fine.) If you cannot socialize the dog well with other dogs and people DO NOT GET AN AKITA - other than that.......get the cuttiest guard dog you'll ever own. p.s. Please don't get a pit bull. They are number one on list of dogs that bite. Of course up to you!

Any dog can make for a good guard dog, it just depends on how fierce the dog's loyalty is toward you.
Sam, my beagle/basset mix that I had since childhood, stopped a robber one night. My room connects to where the dog pens are outside, and someone jovially hopped the fence upon seeing my old hound. Sam bawled and ripped his leg to ribbons - and when I stepped outside, the would-be villian was screaming for help. I deterred a moment before calling the police.
Also: any small dog can be an effective guard. Loud barking can usually scare someone trying to enter your home - and at the least, it'll let you know someone's trying to make a move in so that you can either notify the authorities, or get locked and loaded.

I have an Akita. They are a large dog, very intimidating to would-be intruders. They are great guard dogs, but also very loyal to their family. Years ago, in Japan, Akita's were left to mind the children while the women went out to work in the rice fields. They are faithful and gentle, though a little clumsy and being a large dog, could accidentally knock over a small child.

I have a Japanese Akita also. It is a very large breed, but it is true, are extremely loyal to the family. However, they should only be owned by those that have had alot of dog experience as one of their main traits is stubborness. They are eager to learn and are very easy to train, but only if you do it in the right way. As a first dog, I would go for Lab.

Rottweilers are good because they are loyal to their family. We have one and she has never been a problem. Before we got her we asked several police officers and they recommended either a Rottie or German Shepherd.
She has been the best dog we have ever had.

Our family had a German Shepherd dog. I was 7 when we got him as a puppy and he did nothing but be loyal, love and protect our family. He lived to be 12.

I was going to say Pitbull but I read your second part so we can't say Pitbull (they like to eat little children).
So I would say Golden Retrevier or German Shepard.
Daschund is cute but won't make a good guard dog though.
