It's easier to research which breeds are generally awful with cats, like I did years back, as most, if gotten as a puppy, can be trained to get along with your cat. Early exposure is the key. In answering this question last week, I recall that Norwegian Elkhounds, Belgian Tervurens and Akitas were listed as rather iffy for getting along w/cats, but they are large dogs, so not on your "list". I had 2 cats first, then got a puppy. I have an Australian Shepherd, which is a medium to large dog. They are highly trainable, and my cats like her. You'll have to also decide what attributes you want in your dog. I'd recommend an Aussie, because mine loves retrieving anything, learning new things all the time, playing frisbee, doing agility, but a dog who likes activity may not be your thing. I have a small mutt dog who is fine with the cats, too, as I got him young. Both dogs came from shelters, and that is a good choice, too!

You would do best to call local shelters, and ask if they have any dogs that are good with cats. My dogs all do well with cats, but some others of their breeds-not so well. It's more of a personal thing. However, if you must pick a breed, pick something that is lightyears away from being bred for any sort of hunting, since hunting breeds will have the higher prey drive. if the cat runs-might not be pretty.

The breed doesn't matter as much as the individual dog's temperament and how you socialize and introduce them. I had up to 14 afghans living with a cat and they'd even sleep together (afghans are hunters). If you're cat's not afraid of dogs, you've overcome the major hurdle which is that all dogs will chase a cat that runs. If yours doesn't, you could get most (except the more obviously aggressive breeds) to get along with your cat.

If you raise a puppy with cats, they will grow up to be fine with them. They will see the cats as part of their family or pack.

The only type of dogs that would have innate trouble would be sight hounds, Greyhounds, Saluki, Afgans. These breeds were bred to chase small furry things. So while not all sight hounds would be likely to chase cats, on average they'd be more likely to.

I have a Rat Terrier who gets along extremely well with other animals. The only one she chases is frogs.....lol...seems to be really good with kids as well as other dogs and cats.

breed doesn't seem to matter, it just depends on the dog and how well it adjusts/socializes

Golden retrievers and labs are pretty good with cats. They just look puzzled when they see them.
