Cons: Papillons are an long haired breed so will require a weekly grooming to avoid those mats. They shed constantly so I would recommend you stay away from black clothing. They are notoriously hard to housebreak, my own Paps took about 2-3 years to get the idea of doing their business outside. There are extremes to a pap's personality. You might get a papillon that is a couch potatoe and only wants belly rubs and affection, you might get a papillon that believes himself to be a sheepdog and would literally be jumping off the walls. So when choosing your puppy take that into account. They have the intelligence to wrap you around their little paw.

Pros: They are a very happy breed and will keep you smiling or laughing for hours on end with their funny antics, they are better than television in my opinion. Training using the correct methods will speed by, they are very intelligent and will learn tricks and invents new tricks very quickly. They are fairly quiet if socialize properly and if you ever feel the inclination to sneak your dog into a department store, most will assume he is a stuffed animal. They are very friendly and will ask for a kiss and hug from just about anyone willing to give it to them. They are fairly healthy breed however they are prone to two genetic defects. Luxcating Patellas and Progressive retinal atrophy.

Boy vs. girl: I have always been told that boys are more affectionate and both my pap boys are every inch the lover.

When you have decided that the Papillon is the right breed for you please consider rescue and never buy your puppy from a pet store. Check with www.papillonclub.org for breeders near you.

Good luck with your research!

Papillons are a nice little dog. They don't shed very much & are quite lively. As a rule, girls are more affectionate, but this, of course, is not always the case. They are quite hardy and only require a quick brush with a coarse brush once or twice a week.
