Is it really necessary or just to show a gesture of goodwill?
Is it not nice if we don't?

I'm sure there is a precedent in your office already. If this is done, then by all means do it but you don't have to buy expensive gifts. I suggest you go for $1-3 dollar items,........afterall it's just a memento of the place you visited and to show you thought about them. Furthermore the gift items could be identical to make it less of a hassle for you. This way you don't have to crack your head figuring what to buy for each of them.

It isn't a must to buy stuff, although it is a nice gesture and you have alternatives, possibily sending them post cards from the place you are visiting, bringing back some of the currency (if allowed) to share with them, or possibily some small items like popular books or music in that region that you think they might enjoy. It is not necessary but going to another place feels better when you can share the experience with your friends back home.

No its not impolite. What I usually do for colleagues is send a postcard to work for all of them. As for my friends I have found that most of them are perfectly happy hanging out when I get back going through pictures of the trip. I usually do bring my family stuff. But it is perfectly acceptable not to. One thing to remember about colleagues though if you bring 1 something you have the bring them all something.

I think its nice for them to know that you were thinking of them while you were away. It's not necessary but I think its a nice gesture.
