It's up to you. Gesso (a mixture of paint and glue) is the best bet, but can be expensive.
Straight emulsion works fine, just use 2 - 3 layers.
Emulsion and something like PVA glue gives a similar (cheaper) finish to Gesso.

I usually use a 70/30 mix of emulsion and PVA - this works fine for me and I have been painting more years than I can remember.

I'd go with straight Gesso, and acrylic gesso isn't that expensive. I usually use Golden (nice white) - but on occasion I've used Jerry's Ultimate Gesso with great results. (I usually build up the layers & sand to get a smooth canvas for airbrush - so I use more than most people do, and I've never had a problem)

You can prime direct to the canvas, primer can be bought ready to use. Make sure you prime in different directions (horizontal-vertical) for each layer.
