You need to be very careful about this. I am taking it that you are American? Go to your bank at home first. Make sure that they do not charge you fees for withdrawing in a foreign country. Many banks do that. I had to shop around to find one that doesn't do that. Once you find a good bank that won't do that then you should just withdraw from ATM's in Thailand. You will get a better rate than just exchanging cash. It will automatically convert your money. Its fun cause the reciepts will say how much money you have in baht.

However, if you take a short trip to Cambodia they do not have ATM machines so you have to take American dollars with you.(they use American dollars anyway)

Most banks allow withdrawal in other countries with their ATM cards - but do check with your bank first of check the back of you atm card if it has international banking options like Cirrus or Mastro or PLUS. I do know that in Bangkok and Taiwan Cirrus and PLUS is used by most banks and thus withdrawal is not a problem.

The exchange rate will be the bank's exchange rate so you will lose out a couple of cents but not too much to worry about. The only thing is the bank will charge you about USD2 transaction fee per withdrawal (please check with bank for actual amount).

ATM are easily found in Bangkok (in the city) and Taiwan.

Oh ... the other alternative - travellers cheques ? ... you may save on the transaction fee but some money exchange places will charge you a fee so come to the same and atm are 24hrs the money exchange places are not :)

The atm will usually dispense in the local currency. Make sure you notify your bank that you will be out of the country. So the fraud department will know that there will be unusually activity on your card. Some merchants do take atm cards that have these symbol on them. Visa Interlink, Visa Debit, Visa Delta, Visa PLUS, Visa Electron, Maestro, Cirrus. Check your card for the logo. If your atm card also has a Visa or MasterCard symbol it will work at merchant take those. There may be conversion fees and yes there will usually be surcharges (both ways) when using a atm not in your banks network.

Use your debit card at the ATM s in every major shopping mall. You get baht in exchange for the dollars deducted from your account. For years, I changed money at department store counters or at the hot dusty money exchanges outside.

I don't think there are any charges but if there are, they would be less than the money changer charge.

Best of all: you take out just the money you need and if it turns out you need more later it is simple and easy to get.

yes-every country I have ever used ATM I got local currency at bank rate even if you pay a service charge on ATM the safety factor no standing in line at bank to change you can change often so you don't Cary large sums of cash. Plus the visa card can be used at any outlet that takes visa credit cards I found the visa to be the best for me.
