Through research I have learned that Freemasonry has existed for a long long time. They have changed names over time (Knights Templar), and they have many fringe groups that may or may not be connected to the "real thing".

Freemasonry is a difficult concept to grasp, they appear to be involved in many religious organizations including Mormons and Catholics....however the question remains.....is it the Freemasons or the fringe groups claiming to belong to the elite group of Masonry?

Excellent Question!

Joseph Smith attended several churches, including the Methodist before praying to find out which Church was correct and receiving the First Vision. At one time, he joined the Free Masons after the formation of the LDS Church. He quickly severed his ties with the group. To this day, LDS do not join the Free Masons nor their associated groups.

Although Free Masons have temples and the LDS (Mormons) have temples, the purpose of each is different from the other. Free Masons believe their history of their fraternity and ritual goes back to the building of the Temple of Solomon and believe the tradition has been handed down only by word of mouth since that time. LDS believe their worship in the temple is the same as early Israelite Temples and restored by divine revelation. Although they may appear to have similarities in their origin, the worship and use of the temples is very different in each group.

No. The Free Masons existed before Mormonism. Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church was a Free Mason and a Methodist before he "received the vision". I just found this out earlier today on the internet but I can't remember the name of the website.

No, there are some early members of each church that were Mason's (there's even a Mason temple in SLC), but Free Mason goes way far back in history before these churches were around.

no. they are not. not at all. the free masons trace their orginizational history back to the crusades and the knights templar. the mormons trace their history to a child molester/womanizer who made some stuff up and called it a church.
