San Diego is a Spanish name. The Spaniards arrived earlier to this lands and they are Catholics.

It is because more than 25% of population in San Diego comes from the Philippines and out of that population, 90% are catholics, enough to influence other people.

Since California used to belong to a Catholic country called Mexico, it seems only natural to me.
