The countries that are the most religious are also the most violent or ignorant in our world. Consider Western democracy headed by the USA, and as published by the President of the United States of America.

“We are a peaceful nation, a freedom loving nation”

Some people around the world, especially those who have lost their loved ones, could not be faulted for interpreting those words as meaning ...

“You will be free, or else”

It seems to me that the most religious countries are clearly ignorant in the majority, and the most violent. For the record, the population of the USA is 85% religious, and I’m sure you will find that all of the other Holy War countries are just as bad or worse.

Yes and yes - organized religion seems to be one of the worst things developed by civilizations. Almost invariably it is "my god or else". In the US religious conservatives routinely and with a straight face take political, scientific and ethical positions that are nothing short of absurd. I know we don't have the franchise, but dear god we sure do have a lot. American religions are, in the majority, against women in any sort of power position - women can't preach, they can think as well as men, so why can't they preach - in one religion women can't cut their hair, yeah God really is pissed off about those haircuts - in another only 144,000 people are going to heaven, did they do a census, out of all the billions, living and dead, that't it, so sorry, full up - no room at the inn. Doesn't this all sound ridiculous? What supreme being would destroy everyone who choose a different way of worship, don't you thing such a being would act a little better than we do? And George Bush is an idiot - not many years ago we would have locked up someone who thought they talked to god, pity we still don't - thousands of people would still be alive if we had decent mental health laws. So, yes and yes - but they were violent and ignorant before they became religious. I think the religion just gave them an excuse - how sad. Don't you think god should be happy?

What planet are you from?? This is about Islamic extremists wanting to convert the entire world to Islam and kill all the rest that will not convert. Instead of fighting back should we line up like sheep for the slaughter? You can but I certainly will not.

You must not live in the US and have no clue what freedom is and why we are obligated to help others live in a democracy and have the same freedoms as we do. Trust me I have lived in other countries and I can say with out a doubt no one in the world enjoys the freedoms anywhere near what we have her in America. Just as many Americans who probably never been 25 miles away from their home bash this country. And have no real clue what the alternatives are.

Religion or not, there is an epidemic of ignorance going round the world lately. And that ignorance will destroy the world as we know it in the near future.

Almost every person in this thread is an idiot.

I'm an atheist and I'm not too keen on religion, but I'm certainly not naive enough to believe religion alone causes human conflict. ANY bone of contention--political, religious, economic, or whatever else--may be seized upon by inherently aggressive human beings as an excuse for bloodshed. If you believe that nations or peoples with no religious differences between them will have peace, perhaps you could explain why nations of identical religion have gone to war with each other over issues entirely divorced from any religious questions whatsoever.

I agree with some of what you have said, but also feel that countries like the US as religious as it is isn't as bad as the less developed more backward religious states. The wars going on right now are holy wars for one side only. Not the US side, I get no persecution for my beliefs here and don't hear church leaders advocating any holy war. Well except for Pat Robertson, he is one of the biggest loudest hypocrites in the world and I am ashamed that he is an American. He represents a very narrow view.

No such things as: Most, Best, Better, Worse, Good, Bad and that other metaphorical words we insist on attaching to words. The only thing that exists is "Different" but never ever "Better".
But yes, I totally agree with you in every respect. When someone has to tell how peaceful they are, run with all your might! I'm one of the few who is not religious in this country. Its nice to be the minority thank you. I just stand back and observe. I can observe but cannot change the idiots. The innocent people of the world pay the price unfortunately.

When you combine a few futwas that say to kill all infidels (Christians and Jews), and a overpowerful church, yes a country is bound to be violent. But for the record the United States has 10% of Atheists or Agnostics making it one of the least religious countries in the world.

The U.S. Government is a secular one, despite President Bush's comments. The Government does not trust in God, and we are not one nation under God.

I have to disagree with you though. The Muslim world, around the times of the Crusades, was advanced culturally, medically, and technically. And that was under a Religious government, and they were far from morons.

It unwise to lump all religions together as well. Take Jehovah's Witnesses' for example, they don't wage war. They will go to prison before they will join a country's Army. It is little more than legalized murder.
Do you suppose God says: 'Your nation does need lots of oil, so you may wage war on your brothers.'
In Jehovah's eyes we are all brothers and sisters, offspring of Adam and Eve.
Tell me, how do you view someone who murdered his brother or sister?

Why has technological know-how been so uneducated and ignorant and immersed in a violent and historical previous? for what number centuries did technological know-how instruct that the international replaced into flat, the sunlight revolved around the earth and each little thing replaced into made from a mix of earth, wind, water and hearth? Why is it that technological know-how created all the weapons used to killing in all the wars for the time of history? you have incorrect reason and result. faith replaced into no longer the rationalization for lack of expertise and violent, yet extremely faith (and technological know-how) existed in a time while lack of expertise and violence have been the social conventional.

You may have something there.....

Ill tell you what, go around to the jails in your area, interview various inmates and find out how many people that have been imprisoned for doing what their church told them to do. Feel stupid now?

Violence and ignorance will forever be the fruit of those who dont know God.

A violent man entices his neighbor and leads him down a path that is not good. -Proverbs 16:29
