It depends on what you want, how much money you have for the downpayment, what you can afford each month w/insurance, etc. I do not recommend buying a new car, because a used one saves you so much money. Even a car that is one year's old, is less expensive, and you can often get a great warranty!
If it were me, I would buy a used, American car. Repairs down the road will be less expensive and you'll be supporting our country.

I'd go foreign. Recognizing that many foreign cars have assembly plants in the US, I still think that their design and quality control are not exceeded. I've driven Toyota for over 20 years and vouchsafe for their performance and reliability.

You should by the car that will help you save the most on gaz, then as a second criteria you should decide about how long you will keep that car. If you plan to change it before 4 years you can by a car with a short longevity.

it used to be foreign cars were the best value. .
nowadays it is much closer.
Test drive everything you think you like, and check online (reviews of cars). . and then decide.
I would make the biggest criteria the reliability of the car (how much and how often does it break down, how costly is it to fix). .
and the second, of course, would be gas mileage. .
in fact, I wouldn't even consider a car that doesn't get at least 28 miles to the gallon, and then I go from there. .

Try a fore-ican hybrid:
Mercedes-Benz-Daimier owns Chrysler/Jeep/Eagle/Dodge, whom sends us autos from Canada. www.askdrz.com
Jaguar, Mazda, Volvo, Land Rover, and Austin Martin are on Ford's official website along with Mercury and Lincoln.
That leaves GM, which has dealerships worldwide so no1 knows what parts were made where?
There is one American manufacturer that builds totally electric cars for $100K.
