How much do you pay your babysitter? I am thinking of babysitting for extra money. I am a 26 year old, married, mother of 3. My 2 oldest kids are both in school all day now and it's just me and my 22 month old at home. What is the average amount paid to babysit? I want to make sure I am not asking too much. Is $2.50-$3.00 and hour average?

I think 3.00 an hour is acceptable per child. That's what I pay my daycare provider. Word of advice though, if you are going to be a babysitter, you should get 4C certified, because then whatever you pay for food and neccessities for the kids your watching, the state will reimburse you.

Sounds fair to me. I'm on the West Coast and that's what I charge. From the answers you've already been getting I think you could get away with charging a little more. You could consider charging $3.50 an hour per child, but offer families with more than one child a "multiples discount" and charge them $3.00 per child.

Some more tips-

Make sure the parent brings enough diapers so that you don't have to purchase them or use your own.

Charge a certain amount a week for meals (I charged $25.00 a week) per child. Don't let it be an option for them to bring food for their kids because then you'll have to deal with your kids wanting to know why they can't have what so and so's eating.

Implement a late fee... Example- $5.00 for every five minutes that they are late to pick up their children if they don't call to inform you, $5.00 flat rate for being late if they do inform you.

Charge them for items that their child breaks or ruins.

Draw up a contract that states all of the above or whatever you and your husband agree on and make sure the family that you babysit for agrees on everything too. Have them sign it and make sure they get a copy.

My daughters babysitter doesn't really charge by the hour, she charges per day. It is $10.00 a day for a 9 hour day, and $1.00 extra an hour for anything over 9 hours. I usually pay $60.00 a week for a normal work week, which is dropping her off about 7:15 and picking her up at 6:00. Also, I don't have to pay her if I don't need her one day, like my day off.
I am lucky that I have this woman. She is about 62 and is wonderful.

I pay 95 a week for my 3 year old. Somewhere around 100 a week is average so 20 a day. 2-3 and hour.

I think three bucks an hour is fair for a baby sitter, we got lucky with ours, she only charges $15 per day and $20 if it's an overnight so we end up paying around $100 per week.

depends where you live. But depending on where you live there might actually be laws that you have to be licensed. Make sure you do not get into trouble. I live in Utah and 2.00 to 2.50 is average here. go figure, low minimum wage.

one of my babysitters charged me minimum wage! It was $7.50 and hour of my children sleeping for the 3 hours we were gone! I would have been head over heels for $3.00 an hour!

An average after school care only rate where I live is $5.00 at the day care, so your asking price is pretty reasonable.
