Advil is the same thing as Ibuprofen, and it is known as a non steroidal anti inflammatory drug. (NSAID) It works by messing with your prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are chemicals that are made by the body and are responsible for causing pain, fever and inflammation. Ibuprofen blocks the enzyme that makes prostaglandins (cyclooxygenase), resulting in lower levels of prostaglandins. As a consequence, inflammation, pain and fever are reduced. Tylenol or acetaminophen is an analgesic, no one really knows exactly how it works, but it relieves pain by elevating the pain threshold, that is, by requiring a greater amount of pain to develop before it is felt by a person. It reduces fever through its action on the heat-regulating center of the brain. Specifically, it tells the center to lower the body's temperature when the temperature is elevated.

Advil and ibuprofin are the same medicine. It works to get rid of pain and reduce the cause of the pain, inflamation. The cons are that you must take it with milk or food, because it is tough on the stomach. The pro is that it doesn't simply relieve pain, it treats the sourse. This medicine can cause gastric ulcers and at worst gastric bleeding, though taken in reccomended doses, and as I said before with something in your stomach, it's relitively safe.

Tylenol (acetomenophen) only works to relieve pain (it tricks your brain into ignoring the nerve signals that pain sends, wanting you to recognise it) but doesn't treat the inflamation. Tylenol is toxic to the liver if take in high dosages, but two tabs every 4-6 hours is reasonable. It's certainly safe at that dose.

The choice is yours. Nothing is without risk or benefit. Just don't take any medicine you have an allergy to.

I know that the only one you can take for a week before surgery is tylenol. Advil and ibuprofen is not allowed. Advil has an acetimeminophen that some how mainly controls the stomach, kidney and olvarys. Ibuprophen has some kind of substance in it that can help make you get a buzz. That is all I know though!!

Ibuprofen is the name of the drug that Advil and Motirn (and others) are made of. They are called Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS). In addition to reducing pain and fever, they also reduce inflammation in tissues. Tylenol is made of a different drug, acetaminophen. It also reduces pain and fever, but does not have any anti-inflammatory properties.
