Parents let their kids play without controlling everything they do.
The goal, and the hope, is that they will eventually learn to put away their toys when they are done. Rather than burning the house down.

Well
That is Very Good Question
I Will Answer Your Question in The Following
1-Why wouldn't God just make us so that we did everything he wanted?
Because He Give us the Free choices,,,so He Can see who will Do Wrong and who will do Right
2-Why leave room for error? What's the benefit of leaving room for error?
he did not leave Room for Error
he just give you Room to Think and Realize what is what , That is why he Gives us brain
3-What's the benefit of freewill if ultimately we have to do what God wants or we suffer?
The Benefit of The Freewill is too much,,,,
we More Than Human we More Than Angles by that Freewill
But Remember while you doing that error or Sin, You will be Feeling Good even thou it is Against God's willing
So Enjoy Now Suffer for it Tomorrow
4-By giving us a choice is that really make us any better?
Yes Of-course , look Brother
Animal Has No Choice They Just Got Desire
Angles Has No Choice they Just Got Brain to Worship
We Human Got The Both
so Therefor if we could control Our desire and Use Our Brain we always do Right
I Hope my Answer make sense to you

How does it glorify God for us to do what he wants because he forces us to do just that? Does a puppet glorify it's master? Now I know there are people out there who get off by dominating others, as well as people who live to submit, but any God who gets his way with you by forcing you to bend to His will doesn't get my vote.
Hey, if you're agnostic, why you asking about God?
As for your followup questions, what good would it be if there was no punishment for doing the wrong thing? What would be the point of that? Of course if you choose wrong you're going to regret it - otherwise the concepts of right and wrong become meaningless. Plus often choosing wrong causes others to suffer so even if you don't believe in God but do believe in Karma, so to speak, then it's going to bite you in the butt when you choose wrong anyway, right? What goes around comes around? No, giving us a choice does not MAKE us better, it gives us the choice to choose to BE better. Free will allows us to do the right thing because we choose to, not because we must.

"Free Will" is just a term that Christians use to describe why they "sin". It's a way for Christians to do all the awful things there God forbids, but let God off scott free. If God is all powerful, then he created man, and free will, and all the decisions we can make with this free will, so God is the source of all things, whether Christians consider them good or bad. That means God create rape and murder, and child pornography, and then Christians use their "free will" to use these things with impunity. Don't buy into the hype. Use your mind.

OK, GOD GAVE US FREE WILL BECAUSE HE DOES WANT US TO WORSHIP HIM AND FOLLOW HIS COMMANDS, WHY BECAUSE HE LOVES US. SINCE HE IS THE CREATOR OF YOU AND ME AND EVERYTHING THAT WE HAVE MAKES GOOD SENSE THAT HE SHOULD GET THE PRAISE AND GLORY. BY HIS GOODNESS AND HIS GRACE WE ARE ON THIS PLANET AND HE WANTS THE BEST FOR US , BUT WE OWE HIM THE GLORY FOR ALL WE ACCOMPLISH. THAT IS ONLY FAIR. GOD DID NOT WANT A WORLD OF ROBOTS, HE WANTS US OT DO GOOD AND IF WE DO THEN WE WILL BE REWARDED. ON THIS EARTH AS LONG AS WE ARE MORTAL WE WILL SUFFER EVEN IF WE DO GOOD, BUT EVEN IN BAD TIMES WE ARE TO PRAISE HIM. IT MAY BE CONFUSING TO YOU NOW BUT AS YOU READ AND STUDY IT WILL BECOME CLEARER THAT IS WHY WE ARE HERE TO WORSHIP GOD AND GIVE HIM THE GLORY AND WHEN WE GET TO HEAVEN WE WILL STILL WORSHIP HIM WHAT A GLORIOUS LIFE WE SHALL HAVE SO MUCH BETTER THAN HERE

The right to choose and our tendency to err shows us a life without the presence of God, that of sin, pain, and suffering. In the end, our expiriance of what happens when we deny God only make us appreciate his good even more. One can not fully apreciate the light of the sun until he has expirianced the darkness of night.

That's just it. God wanted us to choose to worship him or not. We also have the choice of living for Him or not after we are saved. We have the choice of how far to go with our faith. There is a whole line of choices.
God did not want robots. He wanted people to truly love Him and want to talk to him. He thinks we are wonderful and wanted us to desire to talk to Him about all our mundane day to day drudgery as well as the important things.

When you have children U tell them not to do this cause it'll hurt them, not to go this or that place because it isn't safe & what do they do? U know how teens can be, U know what's out in the world so U teach them & show them & drill it in then they go out there U pray they listen to U but U know that they wont with somethings but U love them anyway. God didn't want to bully or control us he wanted our love freely. So he gave us choice him or sin but he also loved us enough to forgive.

You should not be asking these questions. It is like asking "Who made God?" or "Could God make a rock so big that not even He could move it?" You must have faith and believe what you are told without question. Work hard, suffer a miserable life, and you will be rewarded after you die!

It's called LOVE. Because we have the power to make the right choices, If we chose wrong it's called sin. God will stand and ask you why you did something when you could have done the right thing.
