You need to remember the source. Are thehe people who complain that their master's degree wasn't worth the cost the same people who complain about most things? Having a master's isn't a guarantee of success or money. However, it is more education and opens up opportunities that are not available to those with bachelor's degrees.

Depends on what you get into. My sister is an RN and a Master's will only get her an extra dollar an hour where I am from, but it will allow her to teach at the college level, which is her dream. A friend of mine is a teacher, and a Master's doesn't pay now, but in twenty years he will be earning an extra 13,000 per school year more than an individual without a Masters.

It depends on the profession. If you want to be a doctor, lawyer, or college professor, an advanced degree is essential. For careers that do not require advanced specialization, it falls to a case by case basis. Having too much education can make it hard to get an entry level job.
It boils down to your career. If your career will benefit from advanced education, pursue it. If it wont matter one way or the other, do not pursue it unless you want an investment of a few years of hard work for little return.
With that being said, I believe that no education is a waste.

A master's degree can help you land a job in your chosen field. Too many people with bachelor's degrees wind up in jobs they never thought they would be in. Truth is, a bachelor's degree doesn't qualify you for a position of responsibility in many fields. Not to offend anyone, but I know lots of secretaries with bachelor's degrees. I am sure they thought they would be working in some other capacity, but the job market is so very competitive.

The pay for a person who has a master's is significantly higher than those who have bachelors. For example, I know that in my field(social work) that a person with a master's in social work makes about 10,000 more a year than the person with a bachelors.

It makes you more competitive. It also depends on your field and what your goals are. Some fields it doesn't make a difference.
