The roots of Halloween, All Hallows Eve, was the night when the dead would rise and wander about. Then the next day, was a holiday to honor the saints. The restless spirits weren't necessarily intrinsically evil, just unsettled. Maybe they just needed to see the light and pass over. Now instead of ghosts we have kids dressed up as superheroes or Disney characters on a quest to satiate their sugar cravings. I have a hard time considering Halloween evil. It has literally gotten too sugar-coated for us to see it as anything other than a boon for the candy industry and a chance for kids to dress up and have some fun.

Halloween, or All Hallows Eve in the older form, is a modern secular holiday that reflects practices in many different cultures.

The most direct relation is to the Celtic Samhain (pronounced sow-wain), which was a mid-year festival celebrating the spiritual and supernatural forces, including those who had passed over.

Other cultures and religions had similar holidays, at the same or different times of the year, including the Mexican Day of the Dead. Halloween, like many modern holidays, evolved as a way to capture that celebration in a non-religious context.

Of course, opinions vary.

Look, it's free candy and spiderman masks. If you think being over charged for cheap costmes and candy is evil, then sure. But otherwise, don't take it that seriously. Maybe you could choose not to dress up (or dress your kids up) as witches and devils and such if it bothers you. Wear fun stuff instead. Don't have a seance. Don't worship the devil. But trick or treat and costume parties? I know some people ARE really opposed to Halloween, but I'd say pick your battles. This just isn't that serious. It's for fun.

Do I have enough lines?

If it were still celebrated as a Pagan holiday celebrating the harvest season in which some of the crops were burned to thank the pagan gods for a good season then, yes it would be evil.
However, today it's kids in costumes who get to go out 1 nite a year and get loads of candy. So it's not evil.

There are a few extreame bible thumpers out there that claim that halloween is a pagan holiday that'll stary the children from the path of God and take them all to the depths of hell. In reality, halloween is a harmless, well meaning, night of fun where children can escape from that which is normal. The benifits of having a night of candy grubbing debauchery which can help bring communities together far outwiegh any cons that have been claimed against the holiday.

Halloween isn't evil, it's a pagan holiday. In history they dressed up to scare the evil spirits away that walked the earth on that day. Thus said, why would it be evil? They were trying to scare away the evil things.

In modern times I believe it gives children a chance to try on different identies that they normally would never be able to. The shy child turning into a rock star or the timid child a scary monster, boy to girl or vice versa.

Pagan does not mean evil, just different.

The ONLY thing "evil" about Halloween- are the poor, paranoid Christians- who fear that there's a shadow behind every bush! Oh-my-God- there IS!!! Give me a break. One of the reasons why children LOVE Halloween so much- is because for ONCE in their overly politically correct lives- they can "act out" their little "demons"- and for one night, behave the way they WISH they could. -Oh, & collecting the candy isn't a bad deal either.

Halloween is not evil and I'm not sure why anyone would think that it is. I know that some people may consider it evil because it has Pagan roots, but so do Christmas and Easter and no one calls them evil! Here's a link on the history of Halloween for you. Read up on it and judge for yourself if you think it's evil.

Ok, Halloween is actually a Christian Holliday... people forget that.

It was created as a substitute for a pagan holliday known as Samhain (pronounced Sow-wen). Samhain was not known to pagans as an "evil" holliday... it was a time to celebrate fall harvests and the bounty of goods that come from the passage of time (including praising the dead for their gifts).

Christians wanted to compete with the pagan hollidays to make it easier for people to convert to Christianity. (They even moved Christmas to December 25th for this reason). It was then a long uphill battle to convince the world that the Christian form of the Holliday had much significance. So stories and customs (like trick or treat) were added to keep the holliday appealing to all.

Halloween is unfortunately the only one that does not have any other Biblical significance... therefore the mainstream of Christians do not think of it as a Christian Holliday and therefore it can be percieved as sinful at worst... secular at best.

Hope that helps.

Halloween has really become a community holiday and having nothing to do with religion. It does tend to have a darkside but quite frankly I dont see anything wrong with it. I loved it as a kid, I even got married on Halloween, and I look forward to giving my kids my great memories on Halloween!

People who have Halloween on their radars as evil and something that needs to be stopped are really blind to the true threats facing the church and society.
