Take the shortcut! There are several excellent Collins mixers out there that do the job very well. Holland House is one, Canada Dry makes one and Master something(?) the other name. Just add gin, a maraschino cherry and a small splash of the juice or an orange slice all on top of several ice cubes. Best served in a tall, slim, frosted 'Collins glass'. A classic summer drink but good all year round.

The Tom Collins is a cocktail and a variation on a Gin Sour. It is made of:

lemon juice
sugar
splash of soda
Nowadays, commercial "sweet and sour" is often used as a replacement for the sugar and lemon juice.

Various versions replace the gin and rename the drink:

Brandy Collins (Brandy)
Jack Collins (Applejack)
John Collins (Bourbon)
Mike Collins (Irish whiskey)
Pedro Collins (Rum), also Rum Collins
Sandy (or Jock) Collins (Scotch)
Comrade Collins (Vodka), also Vodka Collins
José Collins (Tequila)
