I've been uptight almost my whole life. Now I'll be 19 soon and I don't want to start off being a "grown up" all uptight. Has anyone else gotten through this? It's terrible! There's this thing that I feel in the back of my head (I call it my acorn) that a doctor says could be brought on by stress. Does anyone know about this feeling? Help!

Is this "acorn" about two inches behind the ear? There is a lymph gland their that could indicate an infection somewhere, probably the jaw or teeth, or sinuses maybe. If you are uptight, you might clench your jaw. I went through a year of therapy to relax and release anxiety. I found a series of cassettes called CHAANGE to be the best method for me. They teach you to identify when you are becoming stressed, and how to deal with it. I think the problem most people with anxiety disorders have, is that they just don't realize when they are getting stressed until it is too late, and your body starts screaming to relax. It is good that you have identified that there is a problem at a young age. A lot of people wait until they are older and can't leave the house from fear. Take care of yourself.

There are many books written on the subject on how to relax. I personally used to teach Guided Imagery and that work for many people. Also using Mantras seemed to work for some. That is where you say one word over and over again as you sit or lie down.
But I used to like this:
Sitting with your hands in your lab comfortably, close your eyes and take a deep breath saying to your self,
I want to relax. Then hold the breath a few seconds and as you breath out, say to your self, I will relax and in the second or two before taking the next in breath, say to your self, I am relaxed. Repeat this over and over. This also can be used as a instant relaxation during your daily life when confronted with a stressful situation - just say it to your self before you react to that situation.
