Hi. I just posted this answer for someone else with a hair curling question. I'm going to post the same for you. my sister has very thick black hair and I've used this technique on her. We were in a hurry so I didnt get to spend a lot of time on it, but it still looked really pretty and lasted all night.

First make sure your hair is completely dry. Section your hair by clipping up the top half to get it out of the way.

Then use a thermal setting spray on dry hair (or hairspray if you don't have anything else). Mist the entire bottom section.

Use a 3/4 inch curling iron (Revlon ceramic instant heat is great and inexpensive). Take about a one inch section of hair in your fingers & place the curling iron about half way up. Begin spiral curling as if you started at the ends, but as you do, relase the lever for a second letting a little hair slide through. Keep repeating that motion until you reach the ends. This way, the root area gets the heat the longest rather than the ends. Typically, the hair loses its curl at the scalp.

Hold the curling iron vertically. Touch the thickest part of the hair on the curling iron. When you feel the heat come through and the hair warm up (about 7 seconds), release the lever slightly. Pull out the curling iron from the bottom, trying not to pull on the curl.

Repeat this throughout your entire head, sectioning out parts.

Once your entire head is curled, spray it good with hairspray. Go do something else for a few minutes (brush your teeth, get dressed..etc) while the curls completely cool and set.

Finally, gently rake your fingers through the curls to seperate them a little. Tousle the hair as you spray with a firm hold hairspray. Sometimes I scrunch mine up if I want a messier look.

I've done this on people's hair that swear their hair wont hold curl. The best thing about this look is even at the end of the day after it's relaxed some, it still looks awesome because of the amount of curls you put in it.

Total look takes about 20-30 minutes on shoulder length hair. (Longer for thick hair probably)

Good luck!

Separate your hair into smaller sections, comb through the strand, spritz with a small amount of hair spray before curling. Keep your heat level at a medium setting...you will damage your hair by heat treating it any how. Hold the iron in place for about 30-50 seconds. Let the curls cool before doing anything else with your hair and usually, running your fingers through the curls is all that is needed for a nice, natural bouncy curl. Spray with hair spray again, but not too heavilly. You want to enjoy your curls and natural movement.

i used to straighten my hair. And to seperate that i took a tail-comp and scooped a layer and clipped it up while i did the lower layer, but yeah the straightner never really worked, even with the effort...
