You are not allowed to bring anything that could be used as a weapon (duh) such as knives, guns, baseball bats, golf clubs, etc. You are also not allowed to bring anythng that might explode, like dynamite, gunpowder, ammunition, and the like. But thats all pretty obvious.
The items not permitted that many people may not be aware of consist of things like scissors, straight razors, and other personal items that could be used as weapons. Liquids are, as a general rule, not allowed. The exceptions to this rule are that you are allowed to bring prescription medication if it has your name on the bottle, up to 4 oz. of contact solution, or pre-mixed baby formula. Also, if you are a diabetic, you can bring up to 8 oz. of fruit juice, but you need documentation of your condition.
Beyond that, there is very little allowed on board an aircraft these days. You may NOT bring liquids purchased in the aircraft terminal, even if you buy them beyond security. You can't offer to take a drink to prove that there is nothing bad in the bottle , there are simply no liquids or gels allowed on board an aircraft.

I haven't flown in about a month, but back then, it was all liquids, empty bottles included, they didn't like me bringing my computer with me, but let me...I'd suggest putting your battery in the checked baggage. Cell phones I'd suggest in the checked baggage. Check tsa.gov for the full list.
