English Saddles are measured by SEAT and GULLET

When measuring for the seat of an English Saddle, take a measurement from the side screw on the pommel to the center edge of the cantle.

Measure the gullet in front between the two pomel screws

Basically, the easiest way to get a good estimate on the width of an English Saddle is to clench your fist, then put your knuckles up to the front of the saddle (when OFF the horse) - where the shoulders would meet the pommel/head area of the saddle at the withers. On the saddle the padding at the panel will end and there should be a gap when the saddle is on the horse between this padding and the inside of the top of the pommel/head. Your knuckles should measure about 4" across. When saddle is OFF the horse, you can measure the width by the following:
Where padding ends, if there is about 1'2 - 3/4 " of air either side of knuckles, you have a medium tree, 0 - 1/2" you have a narrow tree, and more than 1" you have a wide, or extra wide tree.
Hope this helps - without pics, it's tough to explain... In any case, when saddle and you are on the horse, there should be at least 2-3 finger gap between pommel/head and withers. And a clear channel all down the gullet, so as not to impede or pinch the spine/shoulders. this is about as simple as I can put it... Measure the vertical cener point when looking at the front of the saddle from the inside, left side to right side.

Different brands have a list what this should measure and what type of tree it is. Typically, 6.5 to 7 inches is standard quarter horse bars.

If you want to measure the seet. Measure from the center of the u-shape pomel straight back to the edge of the seet. The number is the size of seet.
