Learn Italian. Thats the best advice I can give you.

Do some research and find out what interesting/ culturally or historically significant places will be nearby so you can visit them whenever you have a chance!

You don't say whether for study, work or pleasure but I'm going to assume it's work or study. I'm American and live in Rome. I can tell you that housing is very expensive here, so you might want to consider sharing an appartment. If you want to share with other americans, you can find notices on the notice board at the embassy and in pubs where other americans hang out. If language is not a problem, then you should be fine here. You will have a wonderful experience in this lovely city! If you need anymore specific pratical information, I will be than glad to offer any. Benvenuta a Roma!

Take time to visit the city and let it permeate you...how? Just walk around... Rome has a special charme... every single little street, every corner, has a monument, an architecture masterpiece, a little church that deserves to be discovered and admired.
I lived there for a few months, and my favourite pastime was walking without a real plan, trying not to look at my guide or at the map (unless you get lost! Rome is a maze, so always bring a map with you).

Stop in the cafes for an espresso, eat a "maritozzo" (a sweet with fresh whipped cream... to die for), try the "pizza al trancio".

I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did...

before each thing, shuttle around the total united kingdom, which incorporates Scotland and Wales. visit the geographical area, because it truly is totally diverse, and small villages are frequently really picturesque. the united kingdom is a really threat-free united states, yet that does no longer mean there is not any longer any crime, so basically be smart. And as in any city contained in the international, each city has its rougher parts. when you're taking something electric powered, purchase adaptors before you go away because the voltage is diverse. you need to purchase them the following, yet they're oftentimes for taking british electric powered products to u . s . a .. London is a might want to really, yet as already stated, do not stay there an huge era of time. besides the very undeniable reality that nutrients contained in the united kingdom has a foul recognition, there are a multitude of sturdy, low priced eating places, and pubs which serve nutrients. (shop in ideas, you purchase and order nutrients on the bar in a pub, except there's a waiter service) Have a cream tea, they're very fantastic (yet very fattening!). cities you need to imagine about vacationing are London, bath, York, Lincoln, Edinburgh to call yet some. British each body is amazingly fantastic, yet are more desirable introvert than individuals. to illustrate, do not basically strike up communique with people on trains; "hi, i'm Amanda (or although), and that i'm from the U. S." as they received't like it. truly, ask a question first, like "is that this seat loose?" or "is that this the practice to...?". also, individuals have a recognition of being noisy, brash, impolite and ignorant. do not call hundred-365 days previous homes "quaint" as some will discover it patronising, and do not say the individuals saved the British contained in the 2d international conflict. and do not say, "you'll not discover this in u . s . a ." in a condescending way. i have heard individuals say that, and it truly is stressful. Be inquitisitive and respectful, and assume to discover cultural alterations that you hadn't envisioned.

My best advice would be to immerse yourself in the culture as much as possible. Do as they do. Really soak up everything there is to offer, as you never know if you'll have an opportunity like this again.

Second, always make sure you have a map with you. Keep close guard of your belongings when you are out as there are many gypsies and pickpockets around. (At least there were when I was there!)

Third, know where the American Embassies and all other pertinent offices are incase you should have any problems.

Fourth, ENJOY YOURSELF!!

When in Italy, do as the Italians do.
Adjust to them, don't expect them to adjust to you.
They may not have "press 1 for Italian, 2 for English".

My best friend just moved there with her husband to be there for two years for his job.

I would sign up for language classes so you could communicate better. She thinks it is beautiful and wants me to visit. It is hard for her because of the language difficulties and she loves to talk.

Have fun and good luck.
