I read a comment from an Answers user stating that this is the reason why people attack his/her spelling and grammar. I think the reason people attack bad spelling is that there is a spell-check feature that anyone can easily use. People attack bad grammar because it is taught from the first grade all the way through high school and in almost all colleges. If someone has not learnt the very basics through all of that schooling, than he/she deserves to be ridiculed. That’s just my opinion, though. What do you think? Do you think I’m an intellectual bully because I paid attention in first grade English class?

I agree with you with one exception: If someone with a problem puts a very sincere sounding question on this site and makes only minimal mistakes, I hate when someone's only answer is to say "learn to write correctly," or the like. Otherwise I am completely on your side.

I am an engineer and probably the only reason I can spell my name correctly is from repetition.

(That's an exaggeration, but not too much of one - I am terrible at spelling.)

God bless the spell check feature. There's no good excuse for not using it.

As far as grammar, I strongly suspect that some of the questions on this forum aren't coming from people whose primary language is English - and as Will Rogers used to say - I never make fun of a person with an accent, because they can speak more languages than I can.

With that in mind, the intellectual bully theory sounds more like insecurity?

I have pointed out some things to people but I don't ridicule. I spell stuff wrong all the time because English is a language made up of many other languages and the rules that go with them. It's hard to remember which rules to apply sometimes. That said people should know the difference between then and than. So I will point that out sometimes. I don't ridicule though. I just figure I'm helping them out.

How else will people learn if others don't help.

Who is the bully? Are the bullies the ones who take the time to try to use correct grammar and use the spell checker for clear communication and expect the same from others? Or, are the bullies the ones who make no attempt to use correct grammar or spelling and expect others to accommodate them. My vote is for the latter.

I think that practising good spelling and grammar is like good hygiene. Regardless of your background or education, everyone should have it.
