Repeater is usually refered to with microwave technology; However, a repeater is used with telephone lines, many 2 way radio networks, cell phone networks and television station repeaters in fringe areas. Thus a repeater is used on a variety of frequencies to boost the signal, it is that simple!

Without knowing "which" transmission you are asking about, there is no answer. Repeaters date back to the earliest days of telegraph and are used in most all forms of communication, wired /and or/ wireless.
