I was with the first calvary division of the U.S.Army in South Viet Nam in 1966. While in division area I was nearly bitten by a cobra snake[struck my pant leg]. I was wondering if anybody can tell me if the military was prepared for such an emergency that would have occurred if snake had not missed it's mark.

Well Well............I know we stepped in some of the same holes.......( 3rd Brig. 25 Inf Plieku) July 1966. We operated Kontum province Central highlands, as a matter of fact they did have snake bite anti-venom,there were a good number of snake bites, all the MASH units carried it.We were working this place up in the high mountains,Bong Song, it rained, the temp fell to below sixty (60)F. the HQ Co clerk was asking their resupply people for field jackets, anyway..a couple of GI's crossed paths with the snakes, the little mash unit had the anti-venom..they all got a big laugh...Be cool.....LATER

It isn't, and you would have come home in a body bag.

My father was with the 82nd in the 80s, and a bunch of guys got bitten when their DZ was a snake pit during mating season. Antivenom is expensive, and tough to store and transport. Those guys got medivaced to the hospital. The exercise was cancelled. This happened in the woods of NC. I can't imagine that Nam during combat would have been any better prepared.
