Were you raised Catholic? What was it like? I attended Catholic school in Chicago and Los Angeles in the 1960's and 1970's. My family and I went to Mass every Sunday morning and sat in the same pews every time. My house, when we lived with my grandmother, had pictures of Our Lady of Fatima, La Virgen de Gudalupe, various saints, especially St. Anthony de Padua and St. Patrick, and crucifixions.

When we moved to LA, my mom put some of those portraits up, but it was not like my grandma's house. We became good friends with the local priest, like we were with our parish priest in Chicago. I am not as religious as I was when I was a kid, but I've still got a lot of those traditions, and when I look back it was not bad. I actually miss those days hiding behind the rectory playing marbles with my friends and the parish festivals/carnivals where we'd chase each other around.

Please, if you did not attend Catholic school or do not have an experience to share, whether it be one from a Catholic point of view or one similar, do not post anything. I do not want to be insulted and neither do others sharing their experience. Thank you.

wow - i did too but int he early 80's and it was great! we were Polish - Catholic and the festivals and such were a hoot! i recently went back for a wedding between some classmates and WOW -- it was something. we had 54 in my graduating class and my older brothers classmates were there and well, it was such a homecoming. i will attend mass there on Christmas eve and when visiting but this is the first time in a good 10 years i've been around the old gang. our pastor there now was actually a graduate in '77 so i've know him for eons it seems. i too have some of the family heriloom pictures and crucifix up - some were brought from the "old country". not only do they remind me to "keep the faith" but they make me feel close to the family members to which the belonged (their dead) and my family 1100 miles away.
thanks for the smiles your question brought!!

YSIC.

You miss the fun things, but did you learn anything? Do you know if you are going to Heaven or Hell when you die?

I too was raised Catholic in the 60s and 70s. I went to Catholic schools all 12 years. My dysfunctional Catholic family never talked about their faith or applied it to their everyday life. It was just "an hour on Sunday". I grew up feeling hopeless, depressed and suicidal. In my early 20s I attended a nondenominational Christian church and found out for the first time what it means to be a Christian. My life was completely changed. I will never understand why in all those years no Catholic ever gave me any hope or purpose for my life. My view of Catholics, therefore, is that they are misled and missing out on a wonderful life in relationship with God. The web site below explains more.

I played with my friends at the basket ball court, the sisters where always there to watch over us. They scared me to death, if you ever did not do what they said they would grab you up by the collar. They had this look, like God himself looking into your soul

To this day a nun in her full habit ( not many that do it all the time) still makes me feel like that boy again.
