This is an excellent question! Joseph Campbell is one person who address this as an important issue, seeing that civilization is sort of losing its "North Star". He seemed to be saying that we need to reinterpret the classical body of myth in a modern-day framework in order to make its timeless values clear and relevant to the era of technology. Perhaps the "Star Wars" genre of storytelling in some ways does capture the idea ... whatever makes us turn our romantic feeling outward in expression. Space exploration is a spiritually necessary direction for mankind, if not just for knowledge, then for recreating the mythic quest that makes us dream of possibilities.
