can anyone explain what the program java runtime environment on my computer is used for?

why do i need it on my computer

java is used for certain games like the ones on javaboutique.com , and pogo.com. theyre particularly popular for multiplayer games like chess, checkers, hearts, etc. you NEED it only to play java games, otherwise it wont load the java applet, b/c u dont have java installed. i remember it being a several megabyte download last time i installed it, but if u get it directly from java.com it wont have any viruses, guaranteed.
