The reception afterwards is very much like a birthday party.

The first part is a religious celebration. If you are going to the ceremony part, just be respectful and don't feel compelled to do anything that makes you uncomfortable.

If you are going to the ceremony, it is similar to a church service. You will be given a book written in Hebrew and English to follow the procedure. If you are just going to the party, it will be like a very elaborate birthday party. You can give a gift you would give any 13 year old boy and yes, you can bring it to the party. A gift certificate for something he likes would be nice.

Yes, it's a huge party with lots of gifts for the young man.

If it's being held at a well-to-do Temple, an expensive gift would be appropriate.
If it's held at a private home, something more suitable is appropriate.

Call ahead and inquire as to what's appropriate.

Well, if it's at a catered hall, it's like a wedding, and most people give money in the form of checks or savings bonds. If it is at a house, it may be more like a birthday party. You can get a nice leather bound bible at artscroll.com

Yes it is like a normal birthday party and presents are always appreciated. Whenever in doubt about gifts contact the Mother or Big Sister of the Birthday Child - - - a call is always appreciated and better than an 'embarrassing or inappropriate' gift. Peace.

it is not a birthday party
it is a religious rite of passage from boyhood to manhood - excuse me while i laugh!
get him something you think he'd like to have.
money is a big thing at bar and bat mitzvahs....the entire thing is amazing especially if you get to hear your friend chant - it is amazing!
