It is not punishment is is a natural consequence. Your teenager has the freewill to be responsible with your gun or not. If he shoots himself the head and dies it not because you punished him for being irresponsible. He is dead because his brains were blown out of his head.
God put the universe on autopilot. Think of life like an SAT. You can ask questions about the problems to try and understand them and you can study to prepare, but you won't get the answers and the outcome is up to you.
Christians spend to much time asking God to change the laws of the universe and not enough time asking God to change them.

He doesn't punish it for using it.
God gave us freewill so that we may love. If we couldn't make the choice to hate, love would mean nothing.
That said, God--being the creator of life and all things--is entitled to our respect. When we choose to disrespect God, it is an offense to him. Think about your little everyday life, and when you give to someone who not only has no gratitude but who turns around and says awful things about you to others. Are you not offended? And this for giving someone, say, a ride to school and $20 for some snacks. Imagine if you had given someone life and the entire world, as well as saved their soul, and they turned around and spoke poorly of you, hated you, and generally disrespected everything you are. You would be offended.
God gave us everything, and we in turn mock him after refusing to be grateful. We are exercising our freewill by doing this, but it isn't without consequences, as our blasphemy echoes in eternity.
So why, then, would God give us the opportunity to hate him while wanting us to love him? Because love that is not freely given is not love. If God forced us to love and obey him, we wouldn't be loving and obeying--we would just be following orders in a deaf-mute way.

Because MAN made GOD in HIS image. All of these little double-negative questions that the "good book" runs us through are just time wasters brought on by a superstition based religion.
Why does god put homosexuals and peopel that eat shellfish in the same abomination group?
So which is worse? Being gay or eating shrimp? Hmmm,...

I think that's the first thing that turned me away from religion. In one hand they claim free will, but it comes at the price of being punished. That's like telling a little boy he has the option of eating cake and he'll get belted for 5 hours or he doesn't eat the cake at all. Any reasonable person can conclude that free will in religious terms is ridiculous.

I don't believe in your concept of God as a punisher. God is good pure good God is never not good God is never not love. When I do thing that separate me from that constant source of love then I am punishing myself. Acts of selfishness hurt me. Anger and its a medical fact hurts me. Pride lust greed sloth anger etc they are all things that make me feel bad about me. I can choose not to do them and plug into the power that God provides without judgment . The choice is mine. Unless your a sociopath I bet doing bad things makes you feel like Hell too. It makes me feel like hell I know that. We can all live in heaven if we choose too.

We as humans use free will for many many different reasons and things, but God gave us free will for one purpose only.
To accept or reject him. That is the only choice that really matters in the end.
If we reject him, he honors our decision and we have chosen knowing the end result.

You have freewill to choose to do good or evil. If you choose to do evil things you deserve to be punished.

Would you rather be an android? What if he never gave you a free will - and you were forced to believe in him - would you like that?
