My stupid boyfriend was trying to make space on our computer today and he started deleting things he thought wernt in use, or that we didnt need. Afterwards, the computer worked fine while it was on, but when we shut it down and turned it back on later it started up and went to a black screen with the message "NTLDR MISSING"
he says he remebers deleting this program.
What is it? How can i put it back on the computer? I tried f8 to go to safe mode to restore it form a earlier date, but i cant even get to that!

(i know its stupid to just start deleting things if you dont know what they are. Trust me i am super mad at him.)

Please help!!!

Sugar, tell your BF he is a dummy and tell him I said so.

Anyway,

Use your Windows CD to restore this file.

Windows XP Repair Installation

At some point you may need to repair the installation of Windows
XP. This is preferable to a clean install in many cases since it
attempts to only repair your copy of windows without having to
delete all the files on your computer first. In many cases a
repair installation is enough to fix the problem. A repair install
deletes the files normally installed by windows XP and then
reinstalls them off the disc. A repair install will not rebuild
your computer's registry, delete applications and user settings,
or fix problems caused being caused by a program.

1. First you have to boot the computer with the Windows XP cd in
the cd tray. You will see a black screen and it will ask you
to press any key to boot from the cd so press the spacebar
and your computer will boot from the CD.

2. After a moment you will be taken to the Windows XP Setup
screen. Though the second option says to repair do not press
R. Instead press enter to select the setup for Windows XP.

3. Next, you have to accept the license agreement from windows.
Once you've done that it will search for your existing
installation of windows.

4. Once it has finished detecting the installation you need to
select the XP installation you want to repair. You can repair
the installation by pressing R. If you don't see the repair
option you will need to do a clean installation. Your version
of windows may have been damaged in a way that it cannot carry
out a repair.

5. Setup will then copy the files it needs to the hard drive and
reboot the computer. A message will come up asking you if you
want to boot from the cd, don't press any keys and just let
the timer run out. The set up will continue and look like is
doing a clean install but all of your applications and
settings will be intact when it finished.

An important note is to not activate your windows over the
internet right away. Always enable the XP firewall to protect
yourself.

I hope this helps.

Have fun, be prosperous, and be safe!

Try rebooting into Safe Mode. TAP the F8 key on the keyboard several seconds after you first turn it on. This should be just a moment before the screen that says Welcome appears. When the Startup menu appears, just use the arrow keys to pick Safe mode.

(if that menu does not appear, and Windows trys to start, you hit the F8 key too late)

If this does not work, then try the Last Known good configuration option.

Yes, your boyfriend is no help. The letters PC mean "Personal Computer" That means KEEP A YOU HANDS OFF, it's mine.

When I get this I usually reformat and reinstall. I have never done this myself but I have seen this error. You can try some software like Partition magic that can possible repair this error, but I have not used this program myself for repairing the boot.

One easy way is to avoid reformating and losing files. Since you mentioned running out of space. You need two things. The restore disc from the manufacturer or Windows installation disc. and new hard drive.

If you boot from your original Windows CD, you should be able to choose Repair as a option. Hopefully, that will restore the NTLDR and you will be fine.

By the way, NTLDR is one of the most critical parts of Windows, as you have found out, so its best not to just start deleting things.

If you want to clean your computer, download a free utility like CClean to do it for you.

try this:

http://www.xmission.com/~comphope/issues/ch000465.htm#b

Insert the Windows XP bootable CD into the computer.
When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
Once in the Windows XP setup menu press the "R" key to repair Windows.
Log into your Windows installation by pressing the "1" key and pressing enter.
You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
Copy the below two files to the root directory of the primary hard disk. In the below example we are copying these files from the CD-ROM drive letter "E". This letter may be different on your computer.

copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\

Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

Go in to your BIOS. Look for the boot sequence. Set it so that it says CD-ROM first. That should get your computer to give you the option to boot from your windows CD. Then restore a backup af your system. Windows help can tell you how to do it. If that doesn't work, then extract the missing file from your CD. Or re-install windows.

You should restore system data of your computer. It is easy. Go to the windows in safe mode by taping on F8 when the windows is gonna loading. In the safe mode go to start-------> programs------->accessories------>system tools----->system restore and make your computer restore by chooosing a day befroe the happens.
good luck my friend

Ouch, looks life your boyfriend deleted some important booting stuff, you might have to reformat. If you decide to do that when the comp is starting press f10 alot and it will come to a reformat screen, if that does not work. Maybe try a recovery disc. Or call support.

I am not an expert in computers, but if it is up to last resort, why not try to reinstall Windows, it might restore the file your boyfriend deleted, but again don't trust me too much, I am not a computer expert.

^aw man he posted before me, but I don't wanna delete this...
