So I'm going to tell him I've made that decision. But now the question is how? This is not a light subject for me and I don't think it would be for him either......Any conversation starters to get on subject? Any good ways to tell him how?

You don't have to wait for him to make the first move, but i agree, you should be careful. You could make some overtures and see how he responds and take your cue from that. Or if you must tell him (honesty is good) some considerations are to make sure you have uninterrupted talking time, and don't pressure him to feel he has to respond to your conversation. Maybe he will need some time to think, and you have to respect that. I wish you the best in your quest.
