I know that files deleted can be retreived easily from the hard drives using software tools available on the Net. Our secrets don't die when we sell our old computers. Please advise where and what software I should use to wipe out and destroy all information in my hard drives. I do not what to physically destroy my hard drive. Thanks for your help in advance.

No evil intention, just a computer "nut" who do not want "secrets" like passwords, e-mail messages, resume & others to fall into wrong hand. Thanks to those who had answered.

Be careful with this software. Make sure you have OS Recovery Disk handy.

I recommend trying to sell that old rig in working condition. So reinstall Windows, by selecting the DELETE partition option at the beginning of that process.

The install Windows Updates and other programs that came with it. Use Defrag when you are done, then use Disk Cleanup to minimize the use of the disk. It is very likely that your old date will be over-written time and time again, making recovery a waste of time, requiring extraordinary means.

Many of us have our SS and credit card numbers somewhere on our hard drives. I assure you, when I am ready to dump my PC, I will take a nail and hammer to the old harddrive.

Why do you not want to destroy the harddrive? A new one doesn't cost that much. If I were in the market for a used PC I would want a new harddrive.

You sure it's just for you? No plot to take down a government, or parliment building? I just don't trust your Guy Fox mask. Seems like trouble.

Reformatting does not necessarily get rid of the information. Try using Eraser - http://www.tolvanen.com/eraser/
