Probe: State trooper acted appropriately in disputed traffic stop

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- An internal investigation finds a Rhode Island trooper acted appropriately when he escorted a van of illegal immigrants to federal immigration authorities.

Trooper Thomas Chabot stopped the van for an alleged traffic violation on July Eleventh. The encounter led to deportation orders against the driver and 13 passengers.

Civil rights advocates had questioned why Chabot checked the passengers' identification. They also claimed that Chabot threatened the shoot the passengers if they tried to flee.

State Police Superintendent Steven Pare says an internal investigation shows Chabot never threatened the men.

Pare says the officer asked the van's passengers for any sort of identification. When all but two passengers couldn't produce I-D documents, Chabot escorted the van to federal immigration agents.

Send that trooper to Butler County Ohio. Let him work with our Sheriff. My Husband applied for a work visa,
in Florida, 26 years ago. He was denied, there were too
many work visas at the time in that area. When his
sponsor moved to North Carolina, they let him come to the states. Not that many visas in that area. The main thing is he waited until he could come here legally.
Our Sheriff is trying his best to keep the illegals out of our County. If Sheriff Jones were to run for Governor He would have my vote. Trooper Chabot has my vote.
My Husband came from The Netherlands.

NO I didn't until now....this is great news! Wonder why it wasn't on the news? You know that if it was proved that he had threatened them it would have been on every broadcast.
And personally if I was that trooper I would sue all those activists. They lied to try and get their way. To push their agenda.
Where are all the pros on this board that were saying that the trooper was in the wrong and that HE (trooper) was the criminal?? Friggin hypocrites....the whole lot of them.
TY for posting......one other thing this trooper deserves a FAT bonus or raise.

14 people. What sort of a van 'seats' 14 people? And they tried to call it profiling, as well as charging that he threatened them, all the time the video was rolling that proved the lie.

Too bad the border patrols who might get 20 years didn't have a video camera.

Apparently our law officers are assumed guilty unless they can prove otherwise.

Good for him! And good for the Internal Affairs guys!
They must have a great department there.

Old joke about personality profiling.....
If a kid is a chronic bed-wetter, likes to set fires, and is cruel to animals, will he grow up to be a criminal or would he be a good candidate for working in Internal Affairs?
