OK, I know it doesn't really belong in this category, but alot of you guys think outside the box and come up with interesting answers, so I'd like to know what you think. When you're in the bathroom at someone else's home, do you look in the medicine cabinet? Why do people do this? do you think it's wrong and why?

I already explained why I put this in R&S. And I know it's not a deep question, I just wanted to see if there were any deep answers.

I think the answer to this question can actually be quite deep, as you probably suspected when you had the idea.

Sure it's probably rude, but let's skip over that point for a moment.

I think we are drawn to look in the medicine cabinet because we seek commonality and connection. Perhaps it is not so much to intrude on another person's privacy, but to look for ourselves and the essence and confirmation of our own daily existence as repeated and lived out in the experience of others.

Recent studies on how we become who we are suggest that what goes into making up an individual is actually the contributions of many others --families, loved ones, the community at large. Thus we become each other.

The little sneak peeks and discoveries are part of this process, alongside of more formal and overt learning. Perhaps all our lives we are collecting tiny bits of others lives in order to form and confirm who we are --looking for ways that we are the same as others --and ways we are different.

Another approach might be our longing for intimacy and connection--wanting to be closer to others yet restrained by the rules of social disclosure.

I could think about this one all night long!
A provocative question--thank you for asking!

A medicine cabinet can tell you something about the person living there. If they take a lot of nerve, pain, vitamins, beauty stuff or any thing you should find in a medicine cabinet.. Based on the overflow to the medicine cabinet, you can spot what thier focus is on about thier body They will keep all the good stuff in the bedroom dresser and not where the public has access to. We do it cause we are nosey by nature. Yes I do know it is wrong. My cue is weather or not the cabinet is left open. (I always leave my cabinet open) If I don't do it, I feel as if you aren't worth knowing.

You ask: "When you're in the bathroom at someone else's home, do you look in the medicine cabinet? Why do people do this? do you think it's wrong and why?"

I have no interest in doing this - so I do NOT do this. I know enough of my host by conversations. There are social boundaries.
People do this - out of curiosity - how similar or different are we, type question.
Is it wrong? Yes, to me, but not wrong enough to worry about if your not me. People get very curious about things, and forget themselves. That's why that commercial is so funny when the medicine chest shelves fall out. People do this all the time.

I don't do this. Why? Because I'm just not interested. I try to respect people for who they are, and not the drugs they take or what items they have.
Of course, this seems to matter more depending on the relationship you have with the person. A boyfriend, for example. Some people may want to get clues to the kind of person they are dating, and it is not a good way to find out. Medications, personal products, etc.. will not tell you a person's true self.

I believe this would violate laws of trust in any relationship. It is the same as looking in your purse or going through your personal diary. Is it wrong? I think it is in most cases.

No. The medicine cabinet is (or should be) private space.

I took the medicine cabinet out of my bathroom. One reason is that humidity makes medications lose their potency quickly - they are better stored in a cool, dry place. The other is that many people can't resist going into a bathroom medicine cabinet - some out of curiosity, some because they want to sample whatever interesting thing they find.

No I wouldn't look in someone's medicine cabinet. Medicine cabinets can potentially hold very, very personal things (i.e. viagra, birth control, medicine for incontinence, etc.) Invading someone's privacy is wrong. There is a reason why the medicine is inside of a cabinet, rather than just sitting on the counter.

If someone does peek into your medicine cabinet, it is probably due to curiosity and a lack of respect.

This isn't really all that deep of a question. People look into others' medicine cabinets for just a few reasons: they're nosy, or they're seeking drugs.

I don't do it anymore, ever. I used to when I was a drug addict.

Yes, it is wrong. For the simple reason that other people's private lives are none of our business unless they choose to share them with us.

hehe I do it sometimes, but we don't really have "medicine cabinets" as much in Australia, it's basically just toiletries in the cubpoard underneath the sink... and usually only with people i know. I really have no idea why, I guess i'm just curious about what they have in there. Sometimes if there's somethign interetsing in there I actually use it! (not if it's medicine!)

All those people saying "no cos it's a breach of privacy" are bullsh*ting. You know you do it sometimes, or have in the past, it's human nature.

I don't do that, it's a blatant invasion of privacy. It's wrong so wrong. Would you want someone going through your medicine cabinet? I wouldn't so I give others the same respect I would expect if they were in my house.

I look in the cabinet. Mostly because I am a curious thing and like to know what people keep that might make them who they are... like my friend keeps extra pregnancy tests because she is trying to conceive. Most of my friends know of this habit and think its hilarious. I cant help it... its like trying not to open a present sometimes in a weird way till christmas... hmm strange maybe.
