I truly know what you mean. I have a bday in june, and 2 in august for my kids. With a limited birthday budget, it is often hard to find things right away that I would like to get them.
For your son I would say get him what he likes, maybe a gameboy with a few games- it would be much cheaper.
For next year though- maybe you can do what I do- i use layaway. You can choose a bunch of things and just pay for it a little at a time- most places, like walmart give you 3 months to pay off your balance. i do it for birthdays and holidays. simply never have enough cash on hand during those times to give them everything they want or everything i would like to give them.
If all else fails, give him the money and let him choose, or get him a general gift certificate to the mall and let him choose what he wants- maybe a 50 dollar gift card? Good luck and HB to your son and daughter! You might want to get your daughter the same thing too- a gift certificate for the mall- I know girls love to shop for themselves!

I think I have a way to compromise. A playstation 2 is about 150 dollars, plus each game is up to 50 dollars. We got my 8 year old son a Game Boy Advance and it cost about 70 dollars and the games are about 20. So you could buy him the gameboy, and a game for less than the price of a playstation. Plus then he is still getting a video game type toy and he can take it with him when he goes on trips ect. Also, then he isnt sitting in front of the tv while you are trying to watch the news or whatever.

I think a playstation is an expensive present but if you can afford it go for it. Then at christmas it gives you some thing to add to. But if you would rather a few cheaper gifts what about those skateboarding/snowboarding games you plug straight into the t.v. He can then play that and you can also get him some educational toys as well.

I think it is definatly harder when it comes to buying boys gifts. I have 2 boys and 1 girl. Generally I ask them what it is that they want. Since he has requested a play station, explain to him that this is the only gift he will get and that you cannot afford games at this time. You can however rent games for him, then you arent' shelling out the $$$$ for games that they don't like after they have played them. Is he interested in any sports? Maybe a new baseball glove or bat? Good Luck

Playstation. He will love you more! Seriously. It means you have to fork out for games too though. Alternatively you could hire games form the video store. Birthdays aren't about education. There are 364 other days (maybe except Xmas) to give him education in a year. Birthdays are for fun. Make sure the limits about times and rules are set in place about when he can play it before you give it to him.

I am one of those horrible parents that don't buy video game stuff for my son or daughter. I would rather them spend time reading, playing outside or building stuff. My son is 10 now but he's always been hard to buy for. So some ideas are books, cd's of his own, sport equipment, craft supplies - popsicle sticks and glue, sketch pad and pencils. You don't have to feel pressured by this whole video game generation.

you should get him the play station,he will probably like it more because there is so much games out there he can play he won't get bored as fast. Then you should ask family members to get him games so you only have to get him the PlayStation. Trust me he will love it.
