my employer has my cks as married deductions not single. so if i get more of a refund at years end...i wont bother to change it to single. god...not sure how many he has me clainming...

It sounds like you are referring to claiming withholding exemptions. In that case, they will withhold more if you claim "single", so you will get a bigger refund if you do that.

A tax planner will tell you your goal SHOULD be to have a refund of zero, so that you can save the extra money in an account that earns interest, rather than let the government use your money.

You don't have a choice between 'single' and 'married' when you file your income tax return. You seem to be referring to your W-4. This is the form your employer uses to determine the amount to withhold and is not reported to the IRS. A filing status of 'single' usually results in more withholding. More withholding = more refund assuming the same tax liability.

First- you filed your own W4 when you started to work there so whatever is being deducted is because of what you wrote
Second- it makes no difference what's being deducted, if you are not married you file single unless you have a child than you file Head of Household
