Maybe you should try with Delta Airlines
They offer the lowest fares in that route DTT to PHF, flying via Atlanta.

Only Airtran, Delta, and USAir fly from PHF (Newport News/Williamsburg International), and can get you to Detroit with a connection via Atlanta, Cincinnati, Philly, or Charlotte.
If you want a nonstop flight, then you'll have to drive up to Richmond International (RIC) or down to Norfolk International (ORF) where you can get nonstop flights to Detroit on Northwest Airlines.
No one source will always be cheapest, so I'll make a link to Booking Buddy which compares over 40 sources with only one input of cities and dates.

That surprises me, I would think the flight TO Detroit would be cheap and the flight FROM Detroit would be expensive.
