As long as you take frequent trips out and always go in and out of the same door it shouldn't take too long. It took my Jack Russell Terrier a couple of weeks to get it down solid but really within the first couple of days I saw improvement... They're smart little dogs- yours will catch on soon enough. Consistency is the key!

5 months is kinda old for him to pick it up right away = but its not too late to start the best way is to buy a small carrier - or a dog cage to where he has enough room to lay down in and trun around in - do not put food or water in there -let him outside before you put him in there and as soon as you get home let him out and say something like "wana go outside" in your cute playful voice so he knows its a good thing - and when he does his job outside praise him and give him a treat when you come back in - he may have an accident in the cage but he shouldnt do it more than one or two times - dogs dont like to soil the place that is there bed. Hope this helps after about 2 weeks hell have the idea down and it should be ok - so if you ever leave the house for anything always put him up.

to house break our dog we would take him out alot, and as he was going to the bathroom we would say "go potty". and if he would start to go in the house it is important not to yell because he wont understand why its wrong, instead pick him up and move him out side..even if hes still going, once youre outside, give youre command in a happy almost high pitch voice "go potty", good boy. Some people will say tell him NO! show him where to go and then say YES! but puppies take a while to learn one command and if you follow one directly with the other, he wont realize they are two diff. commands., And remember, the best way to tell your dog NO is in a low grawl, nooooooo, like the mother dog would. GOOD LUCk

it all depends on you, if you dedicate yourself to the task it can be accomplished in no time
take your dog outside everyhour that you can and stay with him until he goes, walking encourages them to use the bathroom,
if he's just eaten or drank, take him outside, just remember, if something goes in, somethings coming out
