They're looking for food. Don't keep garbage and pet food outside at night. Skunks are omnivorous so they may be attracted to your garden, fruit trees or grubs in your lawn. It's difficult tho to keep nocturnal pests like skunks and raccoons out of your lawn. Before you let your dog outside at night yell and make alot of noise to hopefully scare them away. An encounter with a skunk or raccoon can be very unpleasant for your dog. Make sure the skunks aren't nesting under your porch. If you think they are put a radio down there during the day and play it loud and throw a bunch of mothballs under there. That should be enough to evict them.

Here are some tips:

* Bright light - Skunks are nocturnal and prefer to stay hidden, flooding an area with light can be an effective deterrent. Use flood lights in combination with motion sensors.

* Automated sprinklers - Contech manufactures a device called ‘The Scarecrow‘ which is essentially a sprinkler attached to a motion sensor that will spray any animals that wander into your yard.

* Spicy pepper solutions - Pepper sprays are reported to work well but must be reapplied every few days to remain effective.

* Commercial repellents - There are many available types, people have also reported success with commercial dog and cat repellents.

you can't. the only thing you can do is keep things away that might entice a skunk. I haven't had any trouble since i have an outside dog, but i used to have them come up and eat catfood on the porch. throw a bunch of mothballs under the porch and maybe it will get the hint and leave.[dog still found one out in the woods].

YOu can't really keep them away from your yard without good fencing. but you can keep them from living under the porch.
Skunks can't sleep where there is light. Put a florescent light under there in a safe way.

Wish I knew. We have the same problem here. Our house is surrounded by woods and we get lots of critters around here. I don't mind most of them, but the coyotes, bobcats, skunks, snakes, etc I can do without.

Call your landlord and tell them about your situation. If they won't do anything about it then you can argue about it. Maybe sue them or something. It's their fault that their is a skunk around your house, and it is their job to get rid of it.

I called my city's animal warden--they came out and set up a trap--then when the skunk got caught they picked it up and assured me it would be released in the metro parks--away from people's homes but they had access to the food in the garbage cans and would not starve or be harmed (put to death)

Best thing to do is get a live trap, bait it with sardines and wait. If you get one call wildlife management to come and relocate it or just shoot it yourself. You could buy a BB gun to help deter them from coming around. Best of luck, hope you come out smelling like roses.
