what can we do to stop this crime

The prior comments about "illegals" make me sick. Do you realize that 18000-20000 people, according to the US government estimates, are trafficked into this country every year? They are slaves. Not voluntary, cheap labour. Slaves. Yes, there still is slavery in the United States in 2006. (That figure does not touch the scores of US citizens who are bought and sold in this country, either.)

Sometimes these people are kidnapped from their homes and brought here. Sometimes they come on their own, tricked by a promise of jobs or education, and end up working as prostitutes, unpaid domestics, sewers in sweat shops..... These victims often have their passports seized and are kept by threats of violence or deportation.

The perpetrators must be punished. There is no question about that. It is hard to catch Johns in a sting, but maybe if there were severe penalties for procuring the services of a slave, whether known to the John or not, it may be a deterrent. Could the fear of serious consequences weaken the demand for foreign sex trade workers? (I think likely not. It's an idea, though.) Maybe people caught with domestic slaves or those caught living off the avails of slave labour should have long, long jail sentences and serious fines. (Deterrent? Only for those who think they might get caught.)

There are laws in place to protect the victims of human trafficking. If they come forward and help law enforcement, they have the option of staying here as a refugee if they want to. But how do they find this out? They may be isolated from the media or from interacting with people outside their slave environment.

There has to be a way to communicate with these people, in their own language, about how to get help. If, whenever a prostitute was picked up by police, if he or she was offered a chance to come forward, this may help. But what about all those people who work as domestic slaves, or those who were "purchased" as brides? Maybe more media coverage, in a variety of languages, might catch the eyes and hears of someone who needs to escape. Perhaps flyers at grocery stores or on telephone poles. Perhaps social agencies could have people trained to be on the lookout for anyone who may be a potential victim.

You can quit fielding questions since Steven B just answered it. Punishing the employers of illegal immigrants is the only action that might work. Amnesty, walls, deportation, and every other suggestion cannot, and will not, work or ever happen. If we are not willing to go after the employers, there is no point in worrying about it any further because it’s a dead issue.

If American businesses were not profiting from illegal immigration it would end tomorrow. However, they are profiting and it will not end.

Maximum prison sentences should be enforced for the parasites that do this to women and children. Have you ever read some of the things that they are forced to do? Some are as young as 10. It's horrible and it must be stopped.
