My dog is very constipated , she is a lhasa apso and is there something too give her? The vet gave me some high fiber food and a enema, but I need somethig else that will work faster.
Thank you

You can try plain pumpkin (no spices), plain yogurt, a little milk, cottage cheese, butter or get a paste type cat laxative from either the vet or a pet store it is labeled for cats but works good and is safe for dogs as well.

Nothing you can find will work any faster than an enema. You do realize it goes into her backside and it isn't something she drinks?

When you use the enema and put the liquid into her, make sure you are outside when you do it. Make her hold it if you can, the longer she holds it the better the result will be.

An enema should un-contipate her quickly and she should be much more comfortable. Just stay out of the line of fire, LOL.

Good luck.

your dog might be a 'retainer' this can happen with hard painful stools frequently as the pain makes them not want to go. sometimes they'll try their best even to retain an enema just letting the liquid seep out.
tell your vet if you suspect this, and then if he's good he'll numb her anus with either a topical or local numbing agent then slowly administer a high volume enema, leave it sit for 5-10 minutes and then he will force her anus open with a speculum, there will be a big mess, but the poo will come out. afterward he should prescribe a numbing cream or suppository to apply for a week or so to make her not hurt and thus un-learn the retentive behavior.

a bad or 'sloppy' vet will want to do this under general anesthesia which is costly and can be very dangerous. tere is no need for this, when proper restraint and a local anesthetic rubbed onto or injected into the anal sphincter muscle is all that is required.

i've given all my animals the same medicine i would take myself with great sucess. it doesn't have to be so pure as for humans, but you can them the good stuff. a small do would get a childs dose. keep up the fiber food or try fiber pills like for older people.
