I had to go drop off a pair of lost dogs at the pound the other day (since I already have more dogs at home than teh county allows). I noticed how a lot of people were dropping off their old pets at the pound. It was heart breaking. I assumed it must be due to the financial hardships that would make one part from their family member.

If it were me, I would try to find a home for my pets if I could not afford to take care of them the way they should be. The pound would be the absolute LAST resort. If I had to leave one at a shelter, it would have to be a "no-kill" shelter. Bottom line: you assumed responsibility for another life. If times are tough, you still have to suck it up and make sure that the animals find loving and safe homes.

I would temporarily give my pet to a relative. Financial hardship is only one reason people give up their pets. When the puppy grows up, some people lose interest. Some people are moving and don't want to bother with a pet. Some would rather put a dog down then put up the money for necessary vet procedures even if payment plans are available. Sometimes a partner gives an ultimatum of "it's either me,or Rover." You should check how we take care of the mentally ill and elderly in this country. A really sick society indeed. Have a nice day.

Best - find someone to take care of the animal for you. Make sure it has a good home and will have plenty of love for the animal. A good friend or a family member would be top choice.

Good - contact a local rescue for the dog's breed. They can help you place the dog in a good home and you'll know they're going to a good home (they do home evaluations).

Not so good- Drop it off at the shelter / pound. Easy way out and worst way for the dog. Highly stressful and no guarantee that it will go to a good home, or a home at all.

If it happens to me, I would prefer to drop my pet at the local pound or paste some notices at available notice boards to let people know that they can adopt this cute pet.

Really depends on the pet I guess. If the pet doesn't need much mantainence, maybe I'll try to keep it. Else I'll do as above

Mentality is it might be with a better owner rather than if it's with me. However, I'll tell the pound to call me if they intend to cull the pet.

Cheers & Bottoms Up

OMG I'm in that situation right now! I'm in the process of selling my house ($ reasons), and already one of my dogs ran away, when the lawn guy was mowing (he was tied up but got loose (so did my pit bull, but he stayed in the yard--he's more obedient)...the people who found him took him to the pound and showed interest in adopting him so I signed the papers to release him--it was good to know he was going to a good home. As for my pit bull, my hubbie refuses to get rid of him (I don't want to either, but I have brought it up b/c of financial reasons). So yes, this happens to a lot of people, I'm sure. It makes me very sad. I am having to keep my pit bull (very sweet animal--all in the training) at my aunt's house for the time being...no one wil take a pit bull just because of the breed...no matter that he has been trained well. This is the main reason I cannot sell him because it will most likely be to someone wanting to fight him (which is so terrible)...or if I was to give him to the pound they would put him to sleep (and he's a good dog!) ...so these are just some of my thoughts on your question...sorry to rant a little, I'm just frustrated. :)

I love my pets, I would never give them away!! People give their pets away for different reasons. The cat that I adopted from the humane society was there because his owners moved and werent able to take him with them. I think its sad when people just give their pets away like its no big deal... and just because your pet gets old shouldnt be a reason to drop them off at the pound and get a new puppy. A pet should be something you keep--even if it gets old, because if you loved it, that wouldnt matter to you, but then again some people are cold hearted.

That is a disgrace. Pets are part of the family. I would never give my kids away in times of financial distress, why would I give away my pets? And to a pound where they will kill them??? Wow - that is just sick.

If anyone gives away their old dog instead of caring for it when it really needs them, they are disgusting human beings...
You reap what you sow...

Every day I drive past a soup kitchen, the next town over. Every day there is a man there with his dog. He eats his food, comes out and gives a plate to his dog. He is REALLY struggling and still has compassion and love in his heart for his pet~~

I would not take them to the pound, that is for sure!!! I would search for the perfect homes for them. Sometimes they just kick the dogs/pets out just because they get OLD! People do their aging parents the same way a lot of time, sticking them in nursing homes and never visiting them except maybe at Christmas.

It isn't always financial. If the dog is old and requires a lot of attention, the family may not have the kind of time so they are getting rid of the pet---probably will get a younger dog. I have seen this happen several times wtih friends of mine. They dont have the patience to deal with an aging dog so off to the pound he goes. Hate to think what they will do with aging parents. :(

Not all people feel the same about their pets as you do. Animals are sometimes abandoned because people move, or the owner has died, or there is something wrong with the animal and they don't want it anymore. Of course, sometimes people cannot afford to keep their pets either and that means the person and the dog are suffering.
