Our base housing was really nice in Virginia Beach, but we moved in right after they had completely redone the townhouses. That's been six years ago, so I have no clue if they're still nice or not, but I did prefer living in housing there. Also, I liked our base housing in Pensacola. They were houses, not apartments, and they also were nice.
When we moved here to Italy, we lived on base for a year, and then moved out and started renting an Italian house. I'm so glad we did! We really love it! We adore our Italian neighbors, and I love our house and wish I could take it back to the States with me when we go home!
I have had good experiences for both living on and off base. For us, it just depends where we're stationed.

off base, because then you are buying your home - it's an investment. Basically, the BAH the military is giving you becomes free money to invest in your house. Whereas if you live on base, it's like renting: convenient, but not smart in the long term. If you're smart you buy a house with a mortgage less than your BAH, then you are ok.

even if you'd be required to live to inform the tale base or allowed to stay off base and collect BAH, is determined by your instructions housing coverage. you'll discover out once you get there. that's largely determined in accordance with how a lot attainable Jr officer housing is open on the submit. IE: if there is significant JR Officer quarters empty, they don't look gonna enable you stay off base. even if that's like maximum bases and there is a housing shortage, then you definately can stay off base.

the ONLY time on base housing is a deal is if you are junior enlisted wiuth a large family. otherwise, you can find something out in town under BAH 9 times out of 10, which means you can choose the kind of place you live in and not be stuck with what they feel like giving you.

I would only consider living in Base housing OCONUS. Stateside? never again, ESPECIALLY if it's PPV run housing.

I will never live on post again.

They take ALL of ou BAH and put you in a duplex that is worth half of what they are paying, so you lose money. You have to put up with your neighbor's issues, have housing natzi's on your shoulder telling you how to live, etc, etc.

The single most annoying thing is when you PCS. Clearing housing is the hardest thing you can ever do. I have yet to get a house from housing as clean as when I leave it as when I enter it. They make it almost necessary to pay the officer wives "sponsored" cleaning teams that cost 450 to 600 bucks.

On post is a huge headache. Reccomend off post.

We have recently moved from Gov't Leased Housing OFF Post to ON Post Quarters....we HATE IT!
OFF Post we had a Hausmeister, only FIVE Units in the Bldg... We had a problem with the neighbours, we could call the Polizei and they would respond quickly.
ON Post we have six Units in the Bldg...noise...rudeness...uncontrolled kids....the list goes on.
We are going to move OFF Post as soon as we get Orders that our Bldg is being remodeled...
CAN'T WAIT! Never again will we live ON Post!

I prefer on post housing. But I known a few friends that wanted off post housing so they wouldnt be around military personal during off duty hours. I feel safer living on post then living off post and that way I'd be closer to my hubby. But if all else fairs, it all depends on the base.

Off post:). We wind up with extra money each month, every little bit helps. Where we're stationed now it's not like it would matter much. My husband and I have no kids, and housing is VERY limited. The housing people laughed when we asked how long it might take us to get on-post housing:). Oh well.

OFF! When I was first married, we lived in a compound of just 10 Senior Officers houses. Everyone knew every detail of our business and whilst I was at work all the other wives did was have coffee mornings and gossip. The women wore their husbands rank like badges and had no lives of their own outside the Army, it was ghastly. We bought our own house and now we live normal, happy lives with my husband just going off to work dressed differently to our charming civilian neighbours!

Off post, BAH is supposed to cover rent and utilities. If you're say, an E4, that gives you one crappy house. Where as on post, E4 gets NCO housing and it's not too shabby, at least where I live. Yea, it's a duplex, but I actually don't share a wall, just a carport.
