Females wait until after second period. Males can breed after one year, but I agree that you need to highly consider not using him for a stud unless you feel very comfortable with the breeder and they will sell to good homes. Spay/neuter is always the best alternative for the pet's health and for controlling the population of unwanted animals. The decision, though, is a personal one and must be taken with great care.

In this day and age any age is no good age to breed.........have your pet spayed or neutered. There are so many out there in need of good homes. If you are not a serious breeder, and from your question, I don't think you are, then don't breed him at all. Get him neutered. His health in the long run will be more sound and you will have longer. God Bless!

They need to be at least 2 years old and have passed health tests (not just vet exams) before being used for breeding, plus they need to have been shown or at least evaluated to prove breed worthiness. As far as age in which sexual maturity takes palce taht can be any time from 6 months old on.
I recommend for his health and for his behavior that you make an appointment to get him neutered asap.

Before you even think about breeding, read this:

By the way, responsible breeders do not breed for profit. They are lucky to break even. They do it because they love dogs and wish to improve the breed.

real breeders call them dachshunds not "wiener dogs"...please don't do this for a money thing, breeding is not a "supplement income" It is a full time job taken very seriously

why do you have to breed him? don't you know how many dogs and cats are put to death every year? give some strays a chance to get adopted.
