In my opinion, everyone is different. And it sort of depends what one defines as a "meal." If a meal has to include every food group and at least four courses, then more than three a day would probably kill you!
I like to eat many times a day, but these "meals" might consist of a cup of yogurt, a piece of fruit, or a sandwich.
Some people claim that eating frequent light meals boosts their metabolism. I'm not active enough to notice any such effects, but these claims could be true for them. What I DO notice is a bit more alertness and ability to focus, because I'm not constantly hungry or full -- just a happy medium most of the time.
Hope you resolve this satisfactorily. Above all, do what's best for you, not what's best for someone else.

It's good to eat 5-6 SMALL meals a day. This keeps your metabolism going all day so that your body doesn't trap as much fat and sugar.

It depends on how much you eat at each meal.
Ideally, you should eat five times a day, but obviously that is three smaller meals and two snacks. Frequent eating keeps your metabolism working.

i think it has more to do with the amount and type of food you eat rather than the no. of meals a day. i knew of people who never had lunch or dinner but prefer to snack whenever they feel and they look amazingly healthy

6 small meals is a common recommendation but I don't think I would want to go through the trouble. sounds like snacking all day.
