I got spanked in school but not by the teachers, it was against the law to hit kids. My mom spanked me in front of my teacher for being rude and mouthing off. Fortunately it was after class because I have no doubt my mother would have spanked me regardless of who was there.
I don't think kids need to be spanked by the schools, its not their job. Its the parents responsibility to discipline their children, no one elses.

They call it paddling in arkansas.. lol It was a 1.5 foot long board about 3 to 4 inches wide by half an inch thick, and it would usually have holes drilled in it I guess to make it easier to swing faster.
I was paddled alot in the fourth grade. A whole lot, I think every week. I remember one time I was taken into the principles office and he made me count and he wouldn't stop paddling me until I couldn't count anymore. I stopped at 20.. My teacher cried watching that, but it was her decision to do it since she apparently couldn't paddle me hard enough.
I never fought anybody.
I never cursed or said anything to my teachers in the fourth grade.
Mrs Hotchkiss and Miss Walker just did not like the way I did my work. I don't know if it matters but I was the only hispanic kid in my school also. In fifth grade I was an honor roll student. That all was the result of my mom helping me at home during the summertime by forcing me to do the work that I didn't do earlier. Her method was far more effective than getting paddled....
This all happened sometime in the 80's. Male. Now I'm 25. I have a daughter of my own but I am unsure about whether or not I would allow her to be spanked in school. It's not that I don't believe in spanking, its just that I do not feel it is effective unless I do it and reinforce it with something else like going to bed early or something like that. Just a spanking alone is not enough. It shouldn't be outlawed in schools; that is something that each parent has the right to make a decision on on an individual basis. You or me or the republicans have no right to tell another parent that regardless of their wishes their child will receive no corporal punishment.

It wasn't all that long ago--but when I grew up spanking was still legal in Washington State Public schools. It is now banned there.
I was paddled three times (2nd, 6th and 9th grades).
I am now a second grade teacher in a private school in Massachusetts. It is illegal here even in private schools. I am one who would like to see teachers get this tool back. However, I don't expect it--in fact there was a bill in the legislature here last year to outlaw parental spanking!!

I am 23, female, and now live in Michigan. When I lived in Oklahoma (about 10 yrs. ago) they spanked children in school. I was fortunate enough not to ever get this punishment, but my parents signed the release form to allow it. From what I understand, they still give spankings in Oklahoma. I do feel that it should be outlawed. It is not anyones job but the parents to spank a child. I do not spank my children, but I grew up with this form of punishment. I would never let anyone else spank my children!

Yes!!! Absolutely. My algebra teacher doesn't need an implement. All she has to do is get really close to your face and say, "I will not tolerate that kind of behavior". She lays a pass on your desk and expects no words of protest, and by that point you are too terrified to even try. Then you have to show up at her room at the en of the day. You have 5 minutes to get there, and once you enter the room, she is sitting in her swivel chair. She uses silence to her advantage. She motions to come here. She will sit you on her lap and scold you until she is done, possibly smacking your hand if you were bad enough. When she finishes her lecture, she will guide you over her lap and spank you with her bare hand. She is a strong lady, about age 30, and she stings your bum. From the first smack I am in tears. By the end, I am sobbing hysterically and kicking my legs. She keeps on spanking, and I my kicking gets too obnoxious, a few slaps to my thighs with fix that problem. When she finally let's me up, I stand very awkwardly. This lady just repeatedly hit me an caused me pain, yet she loves me and gives me a hug. She tells me that she loves me many times, and we hug again , and she shushes me in her hug. All is forgiven.

I was never spanked in school, but I am aware of other kids getting paddled, but I believe it stopped around 1988 maybe? . . . I'm kind of torn in my decision of whether it should be outlawed or not . . true, discipline and order are needed in the schools, but it shouldn't be the responsibility of the teachers or administrators to teach kids how to act . . . discipline should take place at home . . but the bad thing about it is - some parents aren't being parents and kids are raising themselves . . . so really, in a situation like this . . . what can you do?!

Yes- I live in Minnesota, I am 30 and it happened in public schools until i was in the 5th grade. My hubby was in Gary, IN- he is 28 and they whooped kids until the 12th grade there. not sure if they are still doing it now though. (he got it in 11th grade!)
I think that a teachers responsibility should not be to physically discipline a persons children whatsoever, but rather to teach them- but the SOLE responsibility should be on the PARENTS. If your child is unruly, you need to teach them right at home. Teachers dont get paid enough to put up with garbage from these out of control kids whatsoever. They should not be expected to put up with it and have the parents and community complain when one disciplines them (i dont condone spanking, but fair punishment is ok). I would hope if my kids ever stepped out of line that they were put back in place by the adult figure. Children have no right to be disrespectful. But i personally think that if more parents got involved in the schools, discipline issues would be minimized greatly.
Hey- how about, if your child gets in trouble more than a set number of time, the punishment is that the parent has to go to school with that child for three or four days (which we all know would tick a parent off and scare a child to death for the parents to miss work). I know no one would agree- however as a mom myself, I say that a childs discipline starts at home. If you dont do it there, dont expect your child to grow up problem free.

I am a 33 year old woman. I was never spanked. But I remember a girl in my first grade class that was on her bare bottom. The teacher was my role model in college and I did my student teaching for her.
I think that if more spanking went on in schools kids wouldn't be out of control like they are now! Kids today do not respect their teachers and sadly teachers are "parenting" kids today not teaching because their parents are not doing "their" job. No I wish it wasn't outlawed at all. Sadly it is!

I'm 28, male, Arkansas and I was spanked every year I was in school....as for outlawed...idk. I mean if i didn't take a spanking I would have had to stay for detention and my family lived outta town. We only had one vehicle and my dad used it for work so detention was out of the question. So spanking was just about my only option.
