Why do you think religion has survived for such a long time?

Religion has survived for the same reason language survives. It is commonly used, widely accepted, and its impetus is not slowed by iconoclasts. Religion and language both survive because of the people associated with them. The idea that religion is "genetically wired" does temporarily diminish it of some of its lustre, but that idea also has no basis. I should add that about 90% of statistics are made up on the spot.

Religion has survived this long because, like languages, nearly 100% of them have evolved and adapted to their users' and creators' (no, I don't mean God) needs.

I also regard Atheism as a religion, since it is assumed an Atheist would not believe in God if God stood before him/her and created a brand new universe just by mentioning it, or caused an immovable object to meet with an unstoppable force.

Although I believe in God and am mildly "religious," I think Agnostics are pretty clever and less religious than Atheists. Based on probability, assuming an equal rate of inflexibility on the part of "religious people" and "Atheists," I would conclude from a formerly cited statistic that Agnostics have 9x as many friends who are "religious people" than they do friends who are Atheists. If the proclivity for Deism is in any way as socially constructed as I am suggesting, I think Religion will outlast Atheism.
Religion has survived because:
1) Social Construction: Religions (at least some) are able to adapt to the needs of PEOPLE, and PEOPLE make religions adapt.
2) Sheer numbers: Compare to LeChaletier's Principle or the Laws of Thermodynamics. More people subscribe to a religion than not. It follows that this would continue to be the case.
3) Arguments based on linguistic positivism will not sway reliigious people, because they know the meanings in those arguments are equivocal. Compare to putting a paperweight on a helium balloon.
4) Maybe, just maybe, there's something to it.

Good question. Look around you. If this world was a man looking on a mirror would you see a blood thirsty beast, or loving human being? Obviously, you would not like what that mirror would show.

What's the lesson for us? How is it connected to your question?
Hope, the answer is obvious to you. The real ruler of this world is Satan the Devil--not God. ( Revelations 12:9; 1John 5:19)

So? So, if he is the ruler of this world then he is also the instigator and the real god behind so many religions today. ( 1Corin 4:4)

So, to answer your question, so many religion(s)--not only religion--have survived because their god, Satan, is supporting them. But, there will come a time when Satan and all his false religions will be wiped out by the true God. Read and understand carefully chapters 17 & 18 of Revelations.

1.) becuase people need something to believe in. When people get scared or they just plain dont understand something, they have to find a reason for it happening.

2.) Word of mouth and the written word-------There are way too many people who have a religion and there are way to many books and bibles to wipe out all religious beliefs.

3.) free speech--- Anyone with a brain can make a so called relgion. Look at all the religious cults there are.

Religion has survived because, at this point in time, only about 10% of humanity has evolved to the point where they are capable of forming their world-view on the basis of rationality and critical thought. The other 90% are genetically wired to base their world-view on the basis of wishful, magical thinking, delusion, and willful ignorance.

Because people suffer and die. Comfort doesn't come easily for a person, family or community dealing with these things, and the rituals and stories help ease the pain.

In truth, agnostics and atheists need to find a positive approach to helping people deal with these twin realities. Effective engagement to ease suffering and grief would go a long way toward creating a secular society.

The Jews Know God and His Truth.

Christianity has survived because the Lost Gospels have been supressed.

Native Spirituality has survived because we do not listen to Christians.

Paganism survives because of natural laws, harmony and results.

Because most people like to feel like they belong to a community, a group. They like to feel that they are special.

And a group that tells them what to believe, and that they are better than anyone who else who believes differently is very attractive. While not all religions do this, most have at one time or another.
